So far ... Safe
from Alexandria, VA,  Mar 17, 2011

I purchased the Protex HZ-53 Biometric Fingerprint Safe because I wanted the ability to gain immediate access to the contents of the safe without having to fumble around in the dark to enter a code on an electronic key pad, a combination on a dial or insert a key in a keyhole. With the push of a button and the scan of a finger I'm able to gain access to the interior of the safe in a second or two. The safe appears well made and sturdy. It weighs ~100lbs. Has thick walls/door. And, it has five large bolts that function as the locking mechanism. I am unconcerned about being "locked out" of the safe in the event the internal batteries that power the fingerprint scanner die. An external battery pack comes with the safe, that may be plugged in to temporarily power the scanner, allowing the user to gain access to the interior and change any dead batteries. And, if the high-tech fingerprint scanner ceases to function than a low-tech method in the form of a key allows access. I did a fair amount of reviewing and research prior to purchasing the HZ-53 and looked at the Protex HD-53 which has the electronic key pad. The HZ & the HD appear identical other than their mode of entry - so, I'm assuming the overall reviews of that safe bode true for this one (which were very positive). I did follow the advice of other biometric fingerprint safe owners and scanned my finger five times to ensure access regardless of finger position or angle. Currently, I have experienced a 100% success with the fingerprint scanner when trying to open the safe. And, as a test - I have had a handful of people, whose fingerprints were not stored in the scanner, attempt to gain access - all were denied - so, again 100% success on fingerprint recognition. The only annoyance I found was that the key included to open the safe indicated in the directions that a "notch" on the key should be oriented at the 12 o'clock position to open the safe. After a bit of trial and error we found that our key worked with the notch oriented in a different position. Ultimately, no big deal because the key did work; however, it would have been nice if it functioned as the instructions stated. Again, no big deal. Overall, I'm very pleased with the HZ-53 and am looking in to purchasing one of the smaller versions of the fingerprint scanner safe for use in other rooms in our house.
