Technically, brooches are the jewelry; pins are the clasps that attach them to your clothing. In practice, a pin or brooch (also spelled broach) is the same thing. They've been worn for millennia, and the cameo brooch (a portrait cut into the back of a gemstone) might just be the most popular jewelry item ever conceived.
