Although the watchstrap and a new battery cost almost as much as the original watch (its main claim to fame was that it had a real stainless steel back), this is a very nice soft leather strap made in the USA. Far better than the original leather strap which was worn out after about 7 years use. I almost threw the watch away but it was Japanese and kept very good time. The new watchstrap saved it from the junk pile.
