Lore has it that if the groundhog sees its shadow today, it portends six more weeks of winter. That's six more weeks of snow and cold. If he doesn't see his shadow, it's time for sunshine and springtime.
So what was Punxsutawney Phil's forecast today? Six more weeks of winter. But don't get discouraged yet. Maybe now is your chance to make the most out of your winter. Hit the slopes, take ice-skating lessons, perfect your snowball technique, or simply use the next month-and-a-half as an excuse to drink hot cocoa on your sofa (which is exactly what I will be doing).
I really have a penchant for winter clothing. Give me a chance to layer everything from sweaters to leg warmers, and I am happy. If the groundhog's predictions come true, it's just another reason to get out and enjoy the boot-and-scarf weather, maybe with a few new pieces that you can wear for the rest of the winter and into the spring. This cotton turtleneck dress from American Apparel would look great with cable-knit tights and a cardigan for the cold; pair it with peep-toe pumps when the weather warms up.
You know, groundhogs have been shown to have an accuracy rate of less than 40 percent. And, of course, things may have gone differently for the little guy in your neck of the woods. So, if you're hopeful for an early spring, check your local groundhog forecast to see if your town's furry weatherman says the weather will be perfect for hitting a few rounds of golf or not.
Even if the groundhog did see his shadow, spring is still on its way, if just a bit delayed. Start getting ready now with a little spring cleaning. It's one of my favorite parts of spring. No, really. I love to open the windows and air out the house while I'm packing away all the winter wares. Spring is all about renewal, so why not revamp your closet and swap out all your winter clothes for a few warmer weather digs? I think I'm going to start with this striped Calvin Klein dress and a cute pair of Ray Ban sunglasses.
Here in Utah, as well as many other places across the country, it's been a mild winter so far, so I won't be too disappointed to see six more weeks of it and, I hope, a little snow. What about you? Are you hoping for six more weeks of winter or an early spring? Do you believe the groundhog can really predict the weather?
