How Much is That Doggie in the Window

My pets are a big part of my life. They're fat, fuzzy and snorty, just like pets should be. I might as well admit it: My pets are pretty spoiled. I've got two dogs that pretty much do whatever they want, and I encourage their bad behavior. I don't mean to, but with so many fun pet toys, pet beds and pet outfits out there, how can I resist?

Wheezy and Gus

Some people will tell you that dogs don't like to dress up. I'm here to disagree. While it's true that some dogs might not like costumes, it's equally true that other dogs enjoy a good fashion show. Dogs are more likely to be compliant if you can find a costume that fits like a collar (the feel is already familiar) and doesn't make lots of loud, unexpected noises. If you're really lucky, you'll find yourself in the company of a pet with a penchant for hats, but I haven't had a lot of luck with that … yet. Either way, with treats and love, most pets can be coaxed into outfits long enough to get some photos.

While having pets is very rewarding and lots of fun, the responsibilities involved can't be ignored. First and foremost is making sure your pet has enough food and water. There are many theories on what and how often to feed pets; do some research, ask your vet or pick a reputable brand. Just make sure your pet has access to fresh water at all times and enough food to keep him healthy. Choose a matched set of food and water dishes or mix and match a pair to suit your pet's personality.

Making sure your pet gets enough exercise is also important. The number and length of walks required will vary by breed, but making sure your dogs get some park time will make you and them happier in the long run. Before taking your dog out, make sure he's properly outfitted with a collar and leash; you don't want to lose control and have to chase him down the road. You can even secure your pet in the car on the way to the park with a harness, which is an especially good idea if you have a pet who likes to climb into your lap while you're driving. Once you're back home, you want to make sure your furry friend has a comfortable place to relax. A memory foam dog bed is perfect for dogs with aching joints, while a bed with a cover is perfect for shy dogs and cats who like to tuck in when sleeping.

Don't forget about toys. Dogs, cats and even bunnies love to play with toys, and giving your pet something to play with can save you from the surprise of chewed up shoes when you arrive home from work. Catnip is popular with some cats, while laser pointers or feathers on strings are the toy of choice for others. Anyone who has a cat knows they can be persnickety; buy a selection of toys and let your cat decide for herself.

I love talking about my pets, but I also love hearing about pets. Tell me about yours! What's the most unusual pet you've ever had? The best outfit you've gotten your dog to wear? The funniest thing your cat has ever done?

I don't have any pets, but a cat with a penchant for hats is on my holiday wish list.

My cat becomes obsessed with a specif toy/bed/cat condo for a couple months, then one day she's just done with it and never looks at it again.

If I so much a put a collar on my cats, they lie down on the floor and writhe around like they are dying. I would like nothing more than dressing them up, though.

We used to have a pet crab named Sebastian who was really strange and antisocial. Of course, that could have been normal; I have no idea how crabs really act. He lost an eye when he escaped while we were on vacation and didn't last too much longer after that.

I desperately want to put my cat in costumes, but she will have none of that. I bought her a little rain hat that I need to figure out how to make it tighter so she can't pull it right back of f.

My cat looks has looks like he wears eyeliner, so he is sort of in costume anyway. Question: How do you get a cat to drink more water? My cat gets fresh water every day but only takes a few sips.

Shoshii, I hear they like running water -- maybe one of those cat water fountains that keeps a stream of water in motion? http://www.overstock.com/Gifts-Flowers/Petmate-Fresh-Flow-Pet-Fountain/4333113/product.html
