we like sally so far
 from MA,  May 10, 2009

We are really liking having Sally sally forth while we are doing other chores and have her do a great job on dog and cat fur and the daily does of sand that is tracked in. So far she's worked well and the only drawbacks are that her battery doesn't always last long enough and that she has a tendency to keep going under the counter where she gets stuck and I have reach waaaaay under and wiggle her out. We are very happy with her overall on both the laminate floor and the low berber area rug and would recommend her - much better than the 2x daily vacuuming that I had been doing to keep dust level under control!

Roomba
from Stowe Pa.,  Mar 16, 2010

I bought this for my wife (her 2nd one) and was surprised to see how nice and new it looked for a refurbished unit. It works even better than the 1st one I bought for her 5 years ago, and $63.00 cheaper.

Great for pet hair
from Akron, OH,  Feb 15, 2010

I have a cat that sheds a lot as well as allergies, so needed a vacuum that would keep the floor clean. The Roomba does a surprisingly good job picking up pet hair. If I vacuum using a regular vacuum and then let the Roomba do its job, it still finds enough pet hair for another cat, even when the floor looks clean. It is not so great with debris and such. The dustbin is small so it will get full rather quickly. The Roomba can handle thick power cords as well as transitions between carpets and bare floor (it can prop itself up). It will get entangled in thin cords (speaker wire, charging cords) and twist ties are its worst enemy - so be sure to clear the floor of these obstacles. The lighthouses work, but are rather imprecise. The Roomba will turn around way before getting anywhere near the lighthouse. As others have said, the Roomba has poor battery management. The user manual tells you to keep it on the charger whenever not in use. If you do that, you will need a new battery every few months. Now on my third battery, I figured out how to make them last longer. Roomba keeps charging its battery whenever plugged in, even when the battery is full. To maximize battery life, don't leave the Roomba on the charger for more than 24 hours. Then unplug it AND remove the battery until ready for use. (If you leave the battery in the Roomba, the vacuum will drain it if not plugged in). I've done this and my third battery is going strong for almost a year now. The other batteries lasted 3 months tops.

Roomba Discovery
from Puyallup, WA,  Feb 4, 2010

I bought this vacuum for my 88 year old mother who was tired of vacuuming her porch. I have one myself and she was jealous that I could take a nap and vacuum my rug at the same time with good results. She absolutely loves it and I'm glad I bought it for her.

I was pleasantly surprised by the clean appearance of the irobot I received. For a reconditioned appliance, it looked brand new and it runs like it too. Since the company no longer manufacutures this model, I would have had to replace my old one with a more expensive "upgraded" model if I hadn't found this one here. Thanks.

Get the extended service plan
 from FL,  Sep 1, 2009

I've gone through TWO of these. They start out great for the first few months if you can get over the fact that it gets stuck a lot under low furniture. The reason for this is it doesn't have a sensor on top. After the first year you'll start noticing the charge does not hold. It goes from one hour to about fifteen minutes. I've replaced the batteries on both of them but it seems to be the same issue. In the second year you'll notice the buttons to activate it seem to stick or not work at all. SO if you think ONE good year of good service is worth the money , then I say buy it. But get the EXTENDED SERVICE PLAN so you can get another battery after it stops working.
