Difficult to open. Is there a trick to it that I haven't figured out? Love the snapping and popping sound like a fireplace.

    • Gel fuel efficient and crackly, but hard to open

I bought a case from Overstock which was a good value. The cans are very difficult to open. I ordered a paint can open which I hope will help. I also bought a can snuffer to make it easier to put out. So far each can has lasted me 3 hours. I haven't noticed any smell, but it does get a little smokey at the bottom of the can. The directions say to use tongs and the lid to put out the flame, but I found that awkward inside my fireplace. I hope the snuffer helps.

    • Convenient But Expensive

Using these FireGlo Fuel cans with a gel fuel Fireplace is extremely convenient. because the upfront costs are so low. However, if you live in colder climates like up here in the Northeast, the fuel can solution gets pricey. During the winter, I like to spark up the fire in order to warm up the house quickly. The forced air we have takes a little while to bring up the temperature but running the gel fireplace quickens the process. The cans generally don't produce a smell UNTIL they get to the end of the can. Then they generally produce a propane-like smell. The cans last about 2 hours to 2 3/4 hours. So burning the fireplace all day is usually not an option because it would be to costly. I normally only use the gel fuel when there is a chill in the air I want to knock out quickly or on special occasions. I have also noticed a darkening of our olive-colored paint and ceiling above our wall-mounted gel fireplace. The cans do provide a good amount of heat and they allow me to warm up the (part of the) house quicker than just using our forced-air heat. I also enjoy the crackling sound produced by the bubbles in the can. It actually sounds better than a real fire. Overall, the cans produce a good amount of heat and ambiance but they are very expensive to use often or for long periods of time.

    • I don't understand

I don't understand how so many people gave this glowing reviews. I just set up everything for my wife (xmas present) in the bedroom and the smell that radiated was chemically'. The gel itself smelled like strong alcohol which was fine, but when activated for 5 minutes, the room became covered in this awful chemical smell. It was unbearable and terrifying in a sense. I tried googling if this was normal or harmful but can't find an answer. We ended up capping the can and I am now searching for an electric fireplace. The one we picked is convertible so hopefully we can just find the proper insert because I dont plan on spending our nights fearing for the worst for a little atmosphere. That said, I have 23 unused cans if anyone would like them.

    • interesting product

The canisters emit an initial odor that is unpleasnt and repeat this again much more strongly as they are burning down to the end. The cans do not last as long as I had thought they would. You get about 2 to 2 and half hours max out of them. The plus is they really do produce a large and interesting flame pattern like a real fireplace would and it snaps and crackles while burning like real wood.

    • Good Product/Terrible Burnout

This product gives off heat and has a nice appearance, which is good. But, the downside to this is when you out the fuel fire. A nasty burning alcohol smell comes from the smoke. This causes a lot of work for me because my smoke alarm goes off and I have to end up opening the window for a while. Then I have to remind myself to close it. For an outdoor makeshift fireplace, this works. For indoors, not so much.

    • Hope you want to paint your home!

I was pleased with the amount of heat the cans gave off. We dropped down from 3 cans to 1 can. Crackle and flame are nice. Now for the down side...emits a heavy chemical smell when it burns down to the end. Who knows what we're breathing in. The soot discolored the white fireplace, walls and nearly everything in the room. We need to paint in the spring. Looking for an alternative.

    • can fireglo brand and real flame gel brand both be used in all gel fireplaces if we prefer one over the otheraslong as the can sizes are the same?

      • Thank you for contacting us artieheat1. You can choose whichever brand you like the best. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

      • I have used both and they seem the same, as far as flame, smell and burn time. I prefer the Fireglo only because the label is removed so I don't have to worry about forgetting to take it off, which I did once and almost started a fire.

      • yes

    • I'd love to build a fireplace surround around this; do you have any recommendations?

      • Hello bunny628, we suggest that you consult a professional. Thank you for shopping with us.

    • How tall are the cans? I need the dimensions.

      • Thank you for the opportunity to help you with the question about the FireGlo Fuel (24 Cans). The dimensions of the 13 ounce cans are 4.5 inches tall and 3 inches in diameter. Thank you for the question and thank you for shopping Overstock.com.

    • Can this be used in a wood-burning fireplace, and a wood-burning outdoor fire pit.

      • Hi resheed, no, these are not recommended for a wood-burning fireplace or a wood-burning outdoor fire pit. Thanks for your interest, hope this helps!

      • I have never tried that before but I wouldn't think you would use other than the wall or standing free at home.

      • I have used them in a wood fire pit with lava rocks or fake fireplace pieces that look like wood. I also use them in a wall fireplace inside the house. The label state that no soot residue. This is not true. The gel does give off soot because I clean the wall fireplace and there is plenty of soot.

    • They are nearly impossible to open. Is ther some secret to opening?!!

      • Removing the labels from the Fireglo cans is difficult and time consuming. Before using the gel, you have to allocate several minutes per can to peel the labels off. The glue used is strong and the paper is thin. This causes the paper to constantly tear, and to leave paper residue all over the can.

      • Purchase the opener. I had the same problem, but the opener makes it so much easier!

      • I just keep a paint can opener with them. That makes them very easy to open

      • Seriously??? Ever open a can of paint? How about a flathead screwdriver....

    • I have a built in gas fireplace. Can I purchase the Real Flame 18" convert to gel log set for $137.99 and use it with the real flame or fire glo fuel cans, instead of using the regular gas logs and fuel?

      • Yes, you can use the convert to gel logset in any gas fireplace. You’ll only need to turn off the gas line to the fireplace. Also, the manufacturer suggests to use Real Flame Gel Fuel with Real Flame products because other fuels have not been tested in their fireplaces.

    • Does this product have to be used with a gel fuel fireplace?

    • what is the difference between the gel cans and bio ethanol gas?
