This can uses a patented infrared technology. Place hand or debris about 6 inches away from the infrared sensor near the lid. It will open instantly when you approach and will close automatically in 3 seconds after debris has been released and hand moves away. The lid will remain open if debris or hand is within 6 inches of the infrared sensor. There are two buttons on the front to open and close the lid manually and an on/off switch on the back of the trash can. The can is made of stainless steel and features a poly-resin top. It has a 7-gallon capacity. Tested 100,000 times in the laboratory, the design is built to last for years.

I would never have thought of an infared automatic opening trash can. This is my second one; the first one is a little larger, and I needed a smaller one closer to the coffee maker (to catch the used coffee filters which can drip and are quite messy). My larger one is over a year old, and I haven't changed the batteries yet.
Watch out though, the battery cover came loose from the larger can cover, and I almost lost the second one too. Maybe they will find a way to make it more secure.

I got this automatic trash can last Wednesday. The size is perfect for my bathroom. It's good looking and the stainless steel is brushed type. Now, I can open my trash can without touching it. That's hot!
