I did extensive research on which mattress to purchase for my 4 year old. I wanted to limit the chemical exposure as much as possible. There is very little transparency in mattress companies, Spaldin is very transparent, *** They manufacture their mattresses in Spain, which was a plus for me, as Europe is much more cognizant about limiting exposure to harmful chemicals. The mattress itself is super comfortable and had zero strange smell right out of the box. I have encountered weird smells off-gassing from foam products in the past. We let the mattress fluff on the dining room table for a couple of days, this is necessary, as it comes tightly wrapped. Our daughter has a slat foundation bed, the slats are about 10 in. apart and we opted for no box spring, as my research found that you don't really need a box spring if your bed frame has slats all the way across the frame. We have laid on the mattress each night to read to our daughter and find it very comfortable, not squishy soft, but not firm, just right. Our daughter has slept great every night. We visited a local store and tried some of the organic latex mattresses, they were hard as a rock and there is not a 100% guarantee that the "natural" rubber is not mixed with petro products, from what I read it is impossible to make a 100% natural latex mattress, just for consideration. I found Spaldin to be "the best" in terms of reducing chemical exposure and their footprint on the environment, both are crucial to me. This mattress will not disappoint. We plan on ordering a king size for ourselves.

I picked this mattress because it was a more 'natural' product than the other foam mattresses out there. It's v. comfortable, but the thing I like most is that there is NO smell to the mattress. We did open it in the basement and leave it there for a few days first, but I don't even think it was necessary. It costs more than the others, but I think my 3 yr old is worth it.
