This is a very cool kitchen item. The knife block is made of plastic, I would have prefered chrome, there are other sets, but I'm not sure if the silver sets are just plastic as well too.However, the price is quite fair to what they are charging in specialty kitchen supply stores, and the knifes are durable and sharp. They are held in place by a magnet in each slot, and each slot has a plastic case attached, shaped in the knife outline for safety. Its hard to tell in the photo provided.This is a great gift, after I purchsed it, I wish I would have purchased the set of two and given one to a friend, it is even a better deal when buying the set of two.
This is really an awesome product except for that the knives aren't sharp. Every other feature is just right, so I'm still happy to have it, but you might as well by a knife sharpener with it.
