there is no provision to post mount this bird feeder. it simply comes with a flat bottom. I thought it would have a sleeve to fit over a 4x4 post or something but it doesnt.
I got my mother into "birding" when she retired from her job a few years ago. I actually purchased this feeder for myself, but once I opened the box and saw it, I knew I would be taking it to my parents' house. My mother was excited when I told her about it. I just finished putting a double coat of clear varnish on it and will be visiting my parents tomorrow and will install it in their front yard. I will purchase another of these for myself. It is perfectly made. Whoever constructed this paid VERY close attention to detail and is proud of the feeders he/she produces. This is not a product thrown together in a sweat-factory in some foreign land. The picture shows a "weathered" feeder but you will receive a light brown colored cedar one and you can choose to treat it with varnish or not. My mother likes things to look new as long as possible and knowing this, I have treated her feeder as I stated above. Without a doubt this feeder will be enjoyed for many, many years and will prove to be a great value for the money. Be sure to place it where the squirrels cannot get to it! In the past I spent a lot of money on seed and feeders only to have the squirrels destroy the feeders and eat all the seed. I have learned a lot over the years and realize extra effort is needed to beat the squirrels. Feeders must be at least 6 feet from the closest tree and no branches can hang over the feeder, because squirrels are acrobats and will jump down onto the feeder. A "baffle" must be used on the post or pole so the squirrels cannot climb up to the feeder. I will be placing this on top of a 4x4 post and have purchased a round metal disc-shaped baffle from the local birding store which is specifically made for 4x4 posts. It is screwed into the post under the feeder. Also, I bought a simple wooden box attachment from the bird store ($14!!!!... Could be made for $2) that attaches by 4 metal screws to the bottom of the feeder. You then place the unit on top of the 4x4 post and when you want to clean the feeder, it is easily removed from the post. I will do as another reviewer suggested and use the "stake" that you pound into the ground. The post is then placed into the top of the stake and there is no need to use cement. I used this method for 2 other projects at my house and it worked great. The stakes can be purchased to go 2' deep or 3' deep and are approximately $20 each at Home Depot. Be ready for a work-out pounding the thing into the ground though. Since this feeder is large and will weigh a lot once filled with seed, I have purchased the 3' deep "stake," so wish me luck tomorrow! :-) Remember, you can pay the extra money and go the extra mile and truly enjoy the birds who visit your yard for years to come or you can go cheap and spend a lot more $ in the long run and become frustrated with what is supposed to be a relaxing hobby! :-) This feeder is so well built and is very attractive especially for the money. It will hold a LOT of seed too because there is a metal hopper which you cannot really see in the photo. When you raise the lid to the feeder, there it is! The hardware used for this feeder is also top-quality. I am now looking forward to ordering and receiving my feeder! Happy birding everyone...
This is a feeder that needs to be in a suirrel free environment. The birds do not have a chance with this feeder. The squirrel just get in,and don't leave until empty.I would not buy one like this again.
Good price, fast shipping and the best part is the birds are very happy.
After a large tree branch crashed my previous birdfeeder, I searched high and low for a large feeder that I would like, but also that had a reasonable price! I did shop for 3 or more weeks in stores and online before coming back and purchasing this one. I do love the fact the hopper is large, and it will hold so much birdseed. I filled this up over a week ago, and it still has seed. And I have a very busy feeder! The actual feeder itself is much more attractive that the picture on Overstock! It is very heavy and sturdy! I am very pleased with my purchase.
this is so pretty an big i am so glad i got this one, i have been looking a lot for a feeder. thank you so much very well made. cant wait to get it up. i love it very much thanks again.
I started out buying pavilion bird feeders at TJ Maxx each spring. They were pretty, and easy to intall with the screw together metal poles, but they broke by the end of each season. The weight of squirrels and large birds was too much for them. I bought this Stovall Feeder from Overstock for two reasons: 1) the sturdy construction, and 2) the hopper that stores and pours the birdfood means less trips out to fill the feeder. This feeder does not come with a post, so it's a bit of a project to install. You need to buy a 4x4 to mount it on. We didn't want to pour concrete to sink the post, but were able to avoid that and still get the post sunk deep into the ground. (In the "mailboxes" aisle of Lowe's, they have green metal post spikes that attach to the bottom of a 4x4 and extend it down a couple feet. That way you can pound the spike into the ground, avoid the need for concrete, and make it easier to move to an alternate location if you want to do that. They also have green metal brackets that are meant for securing a post to the surface of concrete or wood, but which we used upside down to mount the bird feeder to the top of the post. They're a little spendy, but this feeder is so inexpensive that adding these costs still does not add up to the cost of a feeder with a different post.) Once installed, you can tell that this feeder will last and last. It is very sturdy, and easily supports the weight of the birds and squirrels. It doesn't have the decorative little pickets like the flimsier gezebo feeders, but that is a good thing, because in my experience the pickets were the first things to break off!The hopper holds so much bird food -- it's a great help. It used to be that when I woke up late or missed a morning putting out birdfood, the birds were out of luck. (My hanging feeders will only last a day or two without re-filling.) This one lasts one to two weeks without re-filling because the hopper is so large.
