I searched EVERYWHERE for Victorian hex tiles of this quality! What makes these especially beautiful is that they are also VERY durable! During my "due diligence investigation" I learned that tiles have a very important rating that folks should consider before making a purchase - it is called the PEI ratings [Porcelain Enamel Institute abrasion test]. The PEI scale tests the resilience of the tile surface in relation to what that tile can endure - reputable tiles manufacturers will include PEI ratings on their products. Tiles are ranked on a scale from 1-5. A PEI rating of 1 indicates that the tile is best suited for light traffic areas or better suited on walls since they tend to be less durable whereas a PEI of 5 indicates that the tile can endure high traffic industrial activity. I discovered that most Victorian hex tiles [especially those with the gloss shine] have a PEI rating of 2 [recommended for soft soled shoes with "very small amounts of scratching dirt." ] Because I have kids who often bring entire sandboxes into the house I knew the PEI 2 would not be a good choice for our family - since I do not want to get in the habit of having to replace small scratched tiles. Needless to say, I was thrilled when I found these tiles that have a PEI rating of 4 [medium commercial and light institutional use]. Proved to be the perfect choice for my old Victorian home and a bunch of active children!Read More

Best Types of Tile for Kitchen Countertops
Tile kitchen countertops are an affordable alternative to traditional solid stone units. Countertop tile can be made from many of the most popular materials, such as granite or quartz, yet costs just a fraction of the price. Tile countertops are also easy to install and repair, making them the perfect project for the DIY homeowner. Shop Tiles ▸ Ceramic.Ceramic tile is made from natural clay that is baked to remove excess moisture. It is available in a wide variety of colors and designs that can be mixed and matched to any kitchen. Ceramic tile is affordable, easy to install and very low maintenance. It is also waterproof and able to withstand high temperatures from hot dishes. If you choose ceramic tile for your kitchen countertops, you should be aware that ceramic tile can crack or chip if heavy objects are dropped on it. To minimize grout stains, you can choose a dark grout and use a grout sealer to protect the seams from dirt. Mosaic.Mosaic tile comes in tiny 1-inch square units. It is often sold in large sheets that are attached to a mesh backer-board, making for easy and fast installation. These tiles can be mixed to create unique patterns and textures, and are very durable. One advantage of mosaic tiles is that they are colored all the way through, so a chip or crack will not be as visible as with ceramic tile. Granite.Granite tile is a natural stone product that is widely popular in kitchen decor. Tiles made from granite offer the beauty of natural stone at a fraction of the cost. Granite tiles often have a mottled surface that helps to hide dirt and fingerprints and are incredibly strong and long-lasting. Like all granite products, these tiles must be sealed after installation and at least once a year for the duration of their use. Quartz.Quartz tile is a manufactured product designed to look similar to granite while offering superior performance. It is made from crushed quartz crystals pressed together with resin. Quartz tile has a smooth and uniform surface with a consistent grain. It is slightly less expensive than granite and is much more durable and long-lasting. Unlike granite, quartz tiles do not need to be sealed. They are completely nonporous, which prevents bacteria from becoming trapped in the surface. Quartz cannot be repaired as easily as granite, however, and it offers none of the natural beauty and color variation of real stone. Shop Tiles See All Guides
How to Select Kitchen Flooring

Kitchen floors can be made from beautiful but somewhat fragile solid wood, traditional porcelain tiles or more durable vinyl and laminate options. The flooring in your kitchen should ideally be both beautiful and durable. Select kitchen flooring that will complement the decor of your kitchen and stand up to the spills, scuffs and scratches of everyday life.
How to Buy a Wet Saw
A wet saw is a useful power tool for anyone who will be cutting tile. Wet saws achieve a clean cut without breaking the tile by using a diamond-encrusted blade that rotates the saw through a pan of water as it cuts. The water keeps the saw blade cool, which prevents tile breakage and helps protect the saw's motor. Some wet saws are also capable of cutting through dense metals and brick. For a single weekend project, renting a power tool such as a wet saw may be more economical than purchasing one, but if you'll be cutting tile more than a time or two, owning one of these handy power tools is worth the investment.
