I am looking at this valance (or ones like it) this style confuses me. IF I needed more valance to cover window, would it look funny if the valance was gathered? My one window is 52" (measuring from window frame to window frame) . I also have another window in the kitchen which is only 33"---this valance would be put on a tension rod--IF I decide to put a window treatment on it.

Tips on Decorating with Window Valances
For hundreds of years, window valances have been a dignified and classic way to bring a strong sense of style into an entire room. Window valances can quickly set the mood in a room and turn the window space into a framed work of art. When it comes to curtains and window treatments, you can almost do no wrong. Still, using window drapes to convey a style can be especially striking. Whether you are going for chic and modern window treatments or dignified and traditional window valances, here are a few window treatment ideas to help you on your road to window valance success.
Why You Need a Window Valance
Although sporting a traditional window valance is often attributed to stuffy old mansions, this timeless style is being reclaimed by in-the-know hipsters who are turning the dignity of the window valance into a chic, contemporary look for every apartment, flat or home. You don't have to own an estate to hang curtains and window treatments. An increasing number of young, urban professionals are making apartments feel like home with window drapes to match their modern sense of style. No matter what your living arrangements, window valances can add a finishing touch to make your residence a home. There are a million reasons why you need a window valance, but here are just a few to help give the extra push you need to join the window valance revolution.
Best Valances for Living Room Windows
Dress up the curtains in your living room windows when you buy elegant valances for your home. Whether you want to cover up unsightly hardware above your windows or just add a special touch to your drapes, window valances are a great way to make your living room more polished. With many valance styles available, however, you may be wondering which will work well in your home. This guide provides you with information about the best valances for living room windows.
How to Drape a Scarf Valance
The flowing beauty of a scarf valance adds character to home window treatments. With many ways to drape a scarf valance, it is simple to change the look in each room of the home. Whether the scarf valance is positioned over panels of drapery, sheer curtains or blinds, it adds color and texture to the room. Discover a few basic instructions that will yield a swag-style scarf valance using swag hooks. The instructions may be modified to create a variety of creative valances.
How to Hang a Valance and Curtains
Hanging a valance and curtains over your window will add dimension, texture and style to any room. Window curtains with a valance give your window treatments a finished, designer look. If you want to block out light, a valance and full-length blackout panel curtain is your best choice. If you are more interested in decoration and only need to block minimal light, then a valance over sheer curtains is a good choice. It's important to measure the window and decide what type of curtains you want before you buy the curtain hardware. A cafe rod will be sufficient to support a sheer curtain, but you will need a stronger curtain rod to support heavier fabrics such as blackout panels. Also, the larger the window, the sturdier the curtain rod will need to be.

Cornices mounted close to the ceiling and covering the gap between the wall and window can make a room appear taller and more dramatic. To learn more about decorating using a window cornice, read on.
