    • Evaporative air fan and humidifier with ionizer is versatile, lightweight and economical
    • Fan easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in your house or office
    • Air fan shoots a stream of air with oscillating louvers, to evenly distribute refreshing cool air
    • Can also be used as a fan or humidifier if temperature is not an issue
    • Plus get the air cleaning benefits of the ionic air purifier
    • The remote control allows you to easily change settings
    • Air fan works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat), so this evaporative air fan sucks air through a wick saturated with water
    • As the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air
    • An air stream is then blown out the front of the unit and is considerably cooler than the current room temperature
    • This is not a traditional air conditioner and therefore uses much less energy
    • Note: The unit works well in dry climates; not very effective in areas with high humidity as the unit utilizes water to cool. This is not an air conditioner.

  • NY winter skin saver

I purchased the Sunpentown 609 specifically as a humidifier. If I ever use it as a cooler during the summer months then that would be a bonus but I do not intend to use it for that as I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan where humidity often runs on the high side during the Summer season. As a humidifier this is perhaps the most efficient machine on the market today. First consider that the water curtain last 20 times or more longer than a conventional wick style humidifier which cost a fortune to run as each wick replacement is in the $10 to $20 dollar region. There are other systems out there such as cool mist or humidifiers that boil the water, or the expensive rotating drum type like the Venta. I have used all of the various humidifier types, but my experience is that they are either expensive or difficult to maintain or they fail quite quickly. I have only begun to use the 609 but it appears to leave all the other humidifiers in the dust. When you take a look at the volume of water that the Sunpentown 609 places into the air (.6 to .7 liters per hour) and compare it to other machines I think you will see that as a humidifier there is huge value to the 609 in that it equals the best in H2O output and far surpasses most. So this winter I am saying goodbye to painful cracks in my fingers and lips due to the extreme dry conditions that take place in NYC winters while basking in moister levels that are comparable to the Caribbean. The 609 offers several other bonuses amongst its features. First consider the air propulsion system. It employs a squirrel cage fan as opposed to a propeller driven system. This is infinitely more powerful then a propeller driven fan as it offers a tightly directed focus, and it also employs an optional swing feature if you wish to meter out the air throughout the room. Another feature is the size 15" X 11" X 24". This is a relatively small footprint so it does not take up that much valuable floor space, and it is mounted on casters so you can transport it to different locations to redirect the air flow with ease. Some people might like the timed setting features but I doubt I will have any use for them as on and off will do for me along with three fan speeds. There is also an ionizer to clean the air but this is a feature that I will seldom use as I have ionizing air purifiers within my apartment. For the most part I will be using the 609 solely during the winter while it pumps moisture into my apartment. Speaking of pump. I have not looked at the water pump that operates within the 609 but from what I have gleaned speaking to the technical department at Sunepentown is that it is similar to the impeller driven pumps that operate within my aquarium. I have read several reviews complaining about the noise from the water pump bathing the water curtain within the device. This must be a joke as you can barely detect any water pump sound even under the closest of scrutiny as the fans white noise blankets out the water pump. If you buy the 609 remember to keep the water levels filled when you are using it for humidifying or cooling as a dry impeller will fail (just like an aquarium pump) if the pumps suck air as opposed to water. Fortunately the designers of the 609 kept this in mind by installing an alarm to let you know that it is time to add water. Although I did not intend it for this purpose the temperature dropped about 1 to 2 degrees directly in front of the air flow of the 609 while using it as a humidifier with cool water. I will reiterate what others have stated in that the 609 is only effective for cooling in desert dry conditions during the summer months. However that being the case, I will likely employ the 609 during the summer months strictly as a focused fan to redirect the air flow emanating from my air conditioner. In closing I will state that if you are looking for an extremely effective humidifier then I think you will be very satisfied with the 609. If you are looking for a cooler in a dry region then I am guessing that you will be happy as well although I can not attest to that as this does not apply to the NYC. So remember in the words of Bobby McFerrin; Don't worry (about dryness) be (moist &) happy. One final addendum, as time goes by I'll give you an update about the 609 if this site allows them. Be well.

  • only for dry climates

I think the reason why this product has received some bad reviews is that the people who are using them are in climates that are humid already. I'm in Colorado, which is dry to begin with and hardly no humidity. It's an evaporative cooler, so the water is used to dampen a sponge in which the fan blows the air thru the sponge, adding humidity in the air. Here I cannot feel it because it's so dry to begin with. It's a great option for someone who lives in a dry climate, if you live in a humid climate or where your down to sea level, I recommend you get an air conditionair..

  • Blessing during heat wave!

This product is fabulous! Fast shipping, great price. Don't really need a/c except during rare heatwaves in Seattle area. This kept bedroom cool and electric bills weren't insane. Easy to clean and maneuver to dogs room to keep them cool when we were out. Add ice to the top of the product when you need it to be cooler, but the ionizer and the cool air function with water works just fine for our needs. We thought the sleep function was weird - it is not a timer - but we use it all the time. Lots of extras for a little price. Highly recommend!Remember though - is isn't an a/c unit and won't perform as such. If you need super cold or fast cooling, recommend you spend the dough on an actual a/c unit.

  • Works Great!

I read all of the reviews carefully before deciding to purchase this product. Since I live in a very hot, dry desert climate, I was concerned about the ability of this cooler to work, but it did great. When I had it on high in an 12 x 12 bedroom, it actually got too cool for me overnight! I then used it for a guest who likes to sleep in extremely cool rooms, and it was fine for her as well. It is a tad on the noisy side, but less than a window air conditioner unit would be, plus the price is right. It is a bit of a pain to empty the water out, but not a big problem. In all I am extremely pleased with this item and it performed better than I expected.

  • Not an AC unit but an excellent little cooler

Why purchase a cooler? I have AC in my house. I also have a Sharp portable AC unit in my home office. Running the AC cools most of the rooms, except the office which has sun exposure. The portable AC helps out in that room but I have to open a window to run it. Our electric bill is high! To save money, we do not run these at night. At night, I get hot flashes. I needed cool air or I am miserable. I do not want to leave a windows open at night so I don't use my portable AC. This cooler was a great solution. When I use the cooler on the medium to low settings, it runs more quiet than the portable AC. I place it a few feet from my bed. My husband is on the other side and he can feel the cool air. I do not use this cooler to cool an entire room. It feels great if you are near it. My kids like rolling it from one room to another and place it by their desks to cool off when the AC is not running. It's light, rolls around quickly and is super easy to use. It has a swing feature that moves air right to left and vents that you can point up or down. I would not recommend any cooler to cool of an entire room. I would highly recommend this cooler to cool you off when you and the cooler are going to be stationery for awhile. I sleep much better now.

  • Bad design

I bought this to help me with air moisture and cooling. The plug is located on the bottom of the unit so I'd have to use all the water in it to add more and try to clean it. You cannot lift the thing to empty it so if you don't use all the water within a week mold and slime would build up from the moisture inside the unit. Then I'd have to add hot water and try to shake the hugh thing to get the inside the best I could. You cannot leave this with water in it at all and if I'd fill it with one gallon a alarm would go off. I took it to my sons dumpster. Waste of money! Portable air conditioner is much better. Oh by the way it does not cool anymore than my 20 dollar vaporizer.

  • Evaporated Fan

I live in northern California and I just don't think it was right for our area weather. Had to use so much ice to get it cold was buying ice I couldn't make enough to keep up with what I needed to keep it cold enough.

  • Works great!

We were looking for an answer as to how to cool our bedroom affordably. We got a quote for refrigerated air for our home of $8000, which was ridiculous, so looked for an alternative. This little unit works great, cooling our 10x12 bedroom very well! It cools throughout the night-would recommend!

  • Junk

Even when filled with ice, this evaporative cooler does not cool. Save your money and buy an inexpensive fan. By the way, Overstock charged me a 12% restocking fee in the amount of $*** when I returned the cooler. Not really a very good investment. Come to think of it, that really sucks.

Product Q&A

Ask a Question

how long does this unit run before you have to refill it and how large is the water fill capacity? Does it have a separate area where you can place ice or does it have to be placed in the water fill? vettedino on Jun 1, 2013
Subscribe to Answers
Answer This Question

Thank you for contacting us vettedino. The tank capacity is 10 liters. The time frame may vary between 10 to 16 hours, depending on various factors: - ice/water ratio (we recommend first fill tank with 1/3 ice then water) - ambient room temperature - room humidity - fan speed It is best to add ice to the water tank to keep the water icy cold. There is an ice box on the top for ice only but I personally don't find this feature very effective. Please let us know if you have any further questions. overstockcustomercare1 on Jun 11, 2013
I don't even use water with it. It works great to cool a room even without it. ksufan87 on Jun 22, 2013

No, it does not. overstockcustomercare1 on Jul 18, 2012
No. It's magical. winelifestyle on May 2, 2013
No. If you put water in it at all (it's not required), you pour it directly into the unit. It stands freely wherever you put it -- doesn't have to go in a window, can be moved (on wheels) wherever you put it. ksufan87 on Jun 22, 2013

Answer This Question

This item can be used in any size of room with varying amounts of cooling. It has been reported that this item works especially well in rooms that are up to 12 feet by 12 feet large. overstockcustomercare1 on Jul 12, 2012
Our living room is 14 by 20, with a ceiling vaulted to 14 feet on one side. I wouldn't say it completely cools the whole room, but it does do a considerable job of cooling the seating area I point it at while also bringing down the ambient air around by a few degrees. winelifestyle on May 2, 2013
I originally used it in my very small apartment (maybe 700 square feet), and it cooled the whole area. Right now, it cools our 12x20ish living room with very tall ceilings. ksufan87 on Jun 22, 2013
