Let me preface my remarks by saying I own some Yorktowne that I have had for 20 years. When this new set arrived, I was put off by a few things. First, the color of the clay is browner in tone than the older set. Second, the design transfers are not nearly as well done as my older set. Third, the ware is thinner than my orignal set. Fourth, the first time I used one of the bowls for cereal, I found myself with milk leaking from half way up the bowl. It was not a crack, but a uniform slit all around the bowl which was the source of the leak. After that I boxed the set up and donated it to a local charity. If I didn't have some older Yorktown, I might have been happy with this new stuff (except for the leaky cereal bowl), but I do know the quality this stoneware once had, so I was disappointed by this set.
My sister had wanted this set for years so this past Christmas, I decided to surprise. I had checked various sites for the set, with prices as high as $179.99! I found the exact same set on overstock.com for $XX.XX! Unbelieveable! She was extremely happy to receive the set and absolutely loves it. Good job, overstock.com!
I was very disapointed with these dishes. The price was right but that's about it. First of all, they arrived with two broken cups. Second, some of the plates are warped and are a different shade than the other plates I have that are exacty the same type. Most importantly, although they are supposed to be microwave safe, don't ever touch one when it has been in the microwave! It will burn you!
I have a mixture of this pattern from my parents (married in 1970) and a previous set that I had purchased. The new set is a disappointment. The dishes are a different size, texture, color, and quality than what I already have. The print seems like it is not done carefully and is wrinkled on some of the pieces. The bottom of the dishes are no longer embossed but print screened. Overall I am not happy with the new set, but I will be keeping it so I have enough of these dishes for large family gatherings.
If I had known the quality of the dishes would not have ordered. I have some pieces that are 20 years old; made in America. They are much more durable. A couple of the plates in my order had a chip and bubbled areas on the plate rims. Obviously the clay and glazing aren't what they used to be. Overstock did send me replacements. If you want this pattern and can find some made in USA do it ; but don't buy these which are made in CHINA.
