Panasonic Microwaves have defective door latches and no cheap fix! I have a 1300 watt MODEL NN-SD688S that is 18 months old, looks beautiful and works great but the door latch broke so the micro door cannot be opened. Warranty--one year, five years on the magnatron tube. Panasonic only has one San Diego repair center up in Oceanside...35 miles from my home. The door latch is $38 plus labor. Panasonic knows these are defective and offered a 50% discount on any of their microwaves with free shipping. They call it their "Customer Loyalty" program! I read reviews for at least five models including the $750 convection microwave and all have the same weak door latch that breaks any time ... some broke at less than 6 months, at least they were under warranty. I guess I am lucky mine lasted 18 months. Panasonic wouldnt even let me talk to a tech so I could get instructions how to open the microwave (unplugged) and remove my dinner plate. The referred me to the repair center who won't give me an estimate without bringing it in and they want $45 just to look at it. I got two other estimates to repair, one was $98 labor , $38 in parts. Might as well buy a new one. But buying another Panasonic means the same problem so it is necesary to have an extended warranty. I spent nearly $200 and it lasted 18 months?

When we received our Panasonic convection microwave we were a little worried because the packaging was damaged. The unit appeared to function okay with the exception that the door catches a little when it swings. A month later and the microwave is still working well. Overstock customer service was great! I contacted them with the fear that something could go wrong with the microwave because of the potential damage. Unfortunately, we couldn't exchange the unit because they were out of stock, but they did offer us an Overstock credit. Overall, the unit was working well and there was no obvious damage so we decided to go ahead and keep it. I searched for months for a good-looking and well-rated convection microwave. Trust me, they aren't easy to come by. The Jenn-Air unit was much wider and deeper than this one. I wasn't impressed with the Sharp model either, mainly because of the look and functionality of the control panel. The Panasonic looks really nice on my countertop and works well too! Best of both worlds...
Great product. We live on a sailboat and our trusty microwave oven bought the farm days before we were to fly to the UK for the Christmas Holidays. The panic was on to find a replacement unit that would fit in the galley cabinet so we could finish the Christmas baking. Mission Accomplished: 2 days of baking in the new Panasonic Micro-oven and four tins of cookies later, we hand delivered the goodies to our kids in the UK to rave reviews. Thanks to Overstock.com for effortless on-line ordering, quick delivery and the best pricing. The kids faces said it all!!!
I used to have a microwave/convection oven many years ago and wasn't too happy with the low power of the microwave. This unit is just great. 1100 watts for the microwave side. 16" turntable can handle just about anything you would put into it. I have used the convection side more than I use my oven. I find that in some cases food will cook in less time. The one feature that I have not used yet is the combination microwave/convection cooking. Though the Panasonic microwave/convection oven is a bit pricey, it does pay off as a versatile second oven in the kitchen. And on those hot summer days, it is better than firing up the main oven.
The unique feature of this unit is that it is both a conventional oven (cooks with heat) AND a microwave, both with convection. Common outside North America but essentially non-existent within. Operation is easy and intuitive. Displays are very informative leading you to what knob to set next depending upon mode selected. When my first one failed after about three years, I wanted another and purchased it here. After 12 months, the new one failed too from the same reason the first one failed - the fan of the conventional oven ceased to function, the unit overheated and melted wiring rendering the system inoperable in any mode. The unit is used everyday in microwave mode, 5-6 days a week in conventional oven mode. The best I can extrapolate from this is that those who only occasionally use the conventional oven may never experience the eventual fan breakdown and destructive overheating. I didn't purchase a third one. Your experience will likely be different. Other issues include the interior light - requires a service call to replace - there is no access panel on any side including the bottom that can be remove. Another is interior cleaning from convention oven use. Open holes (vents) from the cooking elements can easily allow liquids to enter during cleaning onto elements and wiring with no way to wipe away. My impression is that there is everything in function and style to make the unit desirable but contains very little make the unit reliable.
We have only had this for a few weeks, but everything seems to function well. I am very happy with this purchase and would recommend this product to anyone looking for a convection microwave.
