The description says 18 inches wide. What is 18inches wide? And is there a base where it mounts on the ceiling and if so , how wide is that?

The light is 18 inches around, and it's recommended that it be hardwired by a professional electrician, the base that it is mounted in to the ceiling fits 3-1/4" or 4" junction/outlet Boxes.
