In spite of the problem I had, I gave this bookcase an excellent review, not only because I am highly satisfied with the product but also because Overstock's customer service was wonderfully responsive. It arrived quickly and was well-packaged. I counted all components and prepared to assemble. I noticed that one piece was improperly marked in the instructions but figured it out. After I began I noticed that the wood on the right side was split all the way through. I took pictures of the damaged piece and immediately filled out a return/replacement form on-line, my main worry being that I would have to repackage and send all back. They informed me that I need not send anything back but would have the damaged piece resent. Because of bad weather on both coasts, it took 10 days, during which I worried that the wrong side would be sent. However, they send both sides as replacement and I was able to finish assembling quickly. This sturdy bookcase looks as pictured, I have my favorite books on all 3 shelves, some of which are quite heavy. This is my 3rd purchase from Overstock with a 4th on the way. I love the products and their customer service is 2nd to none.Read More
I was a bit worried when I had read other reviews about similar looking book cases (the long skinny ones). The cheaper ones had terrible reviews that's why I went with the more expensive version of this bookcase and it's great!! Easy to put together (all screws fit into holes, directions were ok---I mean, I figured it out!!) and the wood looks beautiful and it fits exactly in the space I needed. Nice product and worth the money.Read More

Bookshelves Buying Guide
Despite the name, bookshelves are about more than just shelving books. Bookshelves make versatile solutions as free-standing dry food pantries, open dressers or displays dedicated to your knick-knacks and tchochkes. They quickly convert into china cabinets, media organizers or shoe storage. Whatever the case, the right bookcase goes miles toward making your home into the haven it should be.
How to Decorate Book Shelves
It's important to realize that your book shelves and cases can be as chic and trendy as your other furniture. Your shelves can do more than just hold books. Adding a personal touch to your home's book shelves will make them a valuable and pleasant addition to any room. You don't have to add much to your book cases to make them stand out. Below is a list of suggestions on how to decorate book shelves.
Whether you want a place to store books or simply display collectibles, bookshelves are the perfect solution. A bookshelf is a versatile type of furniture that goes with any room or decorating style. Aside from using them for books, use the space for storage by placing baskets for magazines, games, or videos in the living room. Place bookshelves in the bathroom to store extra towels and bath items. Take this list of bookshelf essentials into account before you purchase a set of shelves.
Best Bookshelf Materials
It's not unusual for bookshelves to incorporate multiple materials for different features. If you haven't decided on wood, wood products, metal or glass bookshelves, look at their relative strengths and weaknesses. Look below to learn the best bookshelf materials. Wood: "Solid wood" is a common term for furniture made from lumber planks. Beware of making assumptions based on labels like "hardwood" and "softwood." Hardwoods are derived from deciduous trees and softwoods from coniferous trees; the terms don't connote their relative strengths. Balsa is a hardwood even though it is very soft, just as Douglas fir is a softwood even though it is very hard. They all make excellent, classic stock material for bookcases. Generally, harder woods are the heavier and more resistant to scratches. Still, softer woods, if treated correctly, will keep just as well as harder woods. Plywood: Made by stacking thin sheets -- "plies" -- of lumber and gluing them under pressure, plywood features grains that alternate direction for strength. Several grades are available, of differing cost. Top and bottom plies can be high-quality woods to create the appearance of fine woods, but edge veneer or molding is needed to complete the illusion. Particleboard: Wood chips glued together carry a much lower price tag than solid wood, and particleboard is denser and more uniform. It's a great choice when cost is the primary consideration. Bookshelves crafted from veneered composite boards can look and feel as good as real wood. MDF: Wood fibers, tiny chips and sawdust collected and glued into sheets form medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Low-cost MDF makes an excellent base for veneers; plus, its strength is consistent and it shapes well. Metal: There's a reason most library bookshelves are made from metal: Metal bookcases are resistant to moisture and fungus, their low-friction shelves are easier on books' bindings and metal's strength-to-weight ratio can't be beat. Their cost usually comes in below any other material. Glass: Glass bookshelves weigh more than other types, but if you plan on assembling your bookshelves only once, the style points can be well worth it. Tempered glass shelves (in wood or metal uprights, called "standards") give your home an unbeatable contemporary feel, and glass bookcases' smooth, transparent surfaces add brilliant levity to a decorating piece that might otherwise be notably opaque and heavy.
