In painting the Mona Lisa, da Vinci employed his famous invention, the technique of sfumato. Sfumato is essentially the blurred outline, the form left vague, as though disappearing into a shadow, softened colors that allow one form to merge into another. Since expression rests mainly in two features: the corners of the mouth, and the corners of the eyes, these were left deliberately indistinct by da Vinci. That is why we are never quite certain in what mood Mona Lisa is really looking at us. Additionally, notice the two sides of the background do not quite match. Also noteworthy is that many details are not visible today because of partial damage or restoration paint.

This piece of art is beautiful. It is very nicely framed and looks beautiful in our dining room. Adds elegance. Everyone I have showed it to was very impressed and asked where I had purchased it from. The only thing I wish was that the canvas itself did not have the braiding around the picture or that the frame completely covered it.

While the canvas was good, the frame was disappointing in regards to its color. It was a very light gold rather than the darker and richer looking color shown in the Overstock photo. Not a subtle difference, but a dramatic one.
