Not exactly as represented.
from West coast,  Dec 23, 2010

This is a tough one to review since most of what has been said by others is MOSTLY true. However, this piece has problems. I would actually rate it about a 3 1/2, but wasn't give that option. Would I recommend it? Maybe, but with some careful reservations and caviats. First, you should know I got this piece as part of a complete bedroom set, but it still is the exact same model number. The first impression was very nice. However, on closer inspection, not quite so nice. Be aware that the dimensions given in the description are sightly incorrect, and misleading at least as far as how much you might expect the drawers to hold. My dresser is 64" wide (cabinet) and 66" wide (top surface) by 47 1/2" tall (cabinet) and 49 1/2" tall (top back plate) by 19" deep (cabinet) and 20" deep (top surface). A loss of 1" depth costs you about 5% of storage space lost, so do the math. Then there were finish issues. Along the bottom kick plate there were unfinished areas. and the finish under the drawers (inside) is sloppy but doesn't show unless you remove the drawer. The cabinet back and dust covers between the drawers do not look like oak or cedar to me at all, I don't know what they are. Also, the kick plate along the front is definitely plywood with oak veneer, not solid oak. Why that piece is different from the rest is inexplicable. So the claim that it is entirely made of solid oak and cedar is false. It is almost entirely solid oak and cedar, but there is also plywood and a mystery material. And fit issues. The spacing around the drawers is uneven. The drawer fronts are not flat with the frame. It's not terrible, but it is annoying if quality of workmanship is important to you. Construction techniques aren't quite as described. Yes, the drawers are nicely dovetailed front and rear, making a strong box with solid cedar and solid oak fronts. The mortise and tenon joints are invisible so unverifiable, but as for dowels they are normally visible and I found no indication that any were used. That may be generic language that applies to some other piece, but I seriously doubt it applies to this chest, although I could be wrong. Finally, they neglected to mention that the furniture is made in China. That may or may not be an issue for you. Yes, it's strong and heavy, but it's not everything it's represented to be. I don't know if it's the same quality as the CF Oakton pieces sold on other sites but I definitely wouldn't pay big money for this piece. If you're okay with the above then buy it. Just don't be surprised if you find minor imperfections and deviations from the product description. Most likely I will keep mine, although with much less excitement than I had when I ordered it. There just doesn't seem to be the consistency and pride of workmanship I expected. Did I expect too much? That's your call to make. I hope this helps you make your decision.

Mule Chest
from Sacramento, CA,  Dec 16, 2007

Beautiful craftsmanship, fast service & gorgeous to look at. Will be an asset to my family for many years to come. Delivery was the only drawback in that it was delivered to my front door and I needed to find help to bring it into my house. After taking all drawers out to lighten the weight, it took a while to find exactly where each drawer fit, but they all did.....beautifully.

Mission Oak Dressers
from Hoffman Estates, IL,  Sep 29, 2009

I bought two of the Mission Solid Oak dressers including the 12 drawer Mule Chest. Both are equally superb in quality and craftsmanship. Each drawer is easy to open and spacious. I did a lot of research before purchasing these from Overstock and feel I got the best deal for the price, it couldn't be beat!Delivery was prompt and professional. I don't have one complaint about my purchase and can't wait until you carry more mission furniture with this quality!

This is a large, heavy piece of furniture. Delivery was quick and damage free. Well constructed and the cedar drawers are a plus. We have seen many levels of mission furniture. This is nice for the price. We expect it to last a very long time. Definitely would recommend it

Great experience, great piece of furniture
from Chicago, IL,  Jul 1, 2009

I shopped for one of these for about 3-4 years and decided on a whim to give OS.com a shot. The delivery was straightforward, the furniture arrived undamaged. Cost me $400 to have it hoisted into my condo, but once it was there, I was a very happy consumer. Fits the space, the color is a little darker than expected. But the quality for the price, especially in comparison to bricks and mortar stores, was unbeatable. Now just waiting for OS.com to start selling the matching nightstands separately again (the other currently line of stands is not as attractive as this style, to me) so I can complete my room and watch it grow old with me. Someone in my family will definitely be happy inheriting this piece, because it is build to last. Thanks also for the newspaper clip, if you are reading this, you know who you are! Cheers!

Made in China
from Fort Worth, TX,  Jan 27, 2011

We've had this piece now for about one year, and like it very much. Holds a lot, (I use it more or less for storing out-of-seaon items, as our clothes closets are pretty small, so I change them out twice per year, spring and fall) and is well-constructed. About the only disappointment was learning the Mission-style pieces offered on Overstock all appear to be made in China, although the product description might lead one to believe otherwise. ("made of No. American Red Oak" or similar verbage.) This is a LARGE item, so measure accordingling, or you'll spend a great of effort to move it. One hint for moving: remove all the drawers first... this does help reduce the overall weight and make it easier to push/pull into place.) I was able to navigate this piece into the bedroom by myself, eventually, with the help of a wheeled, flat furniture dolly, and by removing the drawers. Nice fit and finish, and matches the mirror and two night tables I purchased separately on Overstock. Blends nicely with another Mission piece bought from a different upscale (pricey!) retailer.

This thing is solid (300 pounds). Definitely a mission oak piece. Cedar drawers with dovetail joints. Everything is solid and well built. Price is comparable with furniture dealers except for the shipping and no sales tax. Paid the delivery guys $30 bucks to carry the thing upstairs...they did it without removing the drawers. Get it.

A little lower quality than expected.
from Boxford, MA,  Oct 12, 2011

The description on the website is accurate in that it is oak and the drawers are dovetail. However, the glue used for the dovetail is very visible and very sloppy. The drawers do not go in and out as smoothly as you would expect with a piece in this price range. In fact, it looks like an impressive piece until you start opening things up at which point you realize the quality just isn't there. Delivery was outstanding!!!

  • How did the color on site compare with the actual product? The color match was fine.
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Average at best.
  • How accurate was the on site description of the product? The details are accurate but the quality wasn't as good as we expected.

Mule Chest completes its MIssion
from Burlington, NC,  Aug 19, 2011

This mule chest is the best piece of furniture I have ever purchased. The quality is A-1. It is solid wood and very heavy. The drawers all are made with solid cedar sides and bottoms - what a wonderful suprise since this was not in the description. It does have a strong finish odor at first, but it does dissipate over time. With all the drawers, there is a lot of storage, plenty for two people. With the white glove delivery, it was unboxed and put in place in my bedroom.

  • How did the color on site compare with the actual product? Very accurate
  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. Wonderfully made, beautiful craftsmanship
  • How accurate was the on site description of the product? Very accurate, but did not tell about cedar drawers

Mission Style Mule Chest
from Washington, DC,  Mar 14, 2011

I'm very pleased with the piece. Delivery was a cinch. My only complaint is that there was some sort of greasy pomade-type protectant applied to the chest, which had to be wiped down with a warm damp cloth. This substance had a horrible chemical smell, which took a few days to dissipate. Other than that, it's perfect!

Really nice
from Fort Wayne, IN,  Jan 6, 2011

Dressers are really nice! It took a while to get them, but well within the described time. I'm a little confused over the tongue and groove construction, as the front of the drawer does not appear to be true tongue and groove, only the back sides. Still, it looks great and feels really sturdy. I think we will be happy with it for a long time to come. Delivery was nearly seamless. The only wrinkle was that they tracked snow in from the bottom of their dolly --seems like they would have a dry dolly and a wet dolly for this type of delivery. They were apologetic and kept it to a minimum, but seems like such an easy fix... They said they just didn't have the resources.

Oh My!
from Mountain View, Ca,  Sep 10, 2010

This dresser is a beautiful piece of furniture. I went by the other reviews before purchasing and they were right on the money. It is solidly built, with a great finish and the fragrance of the cedar drawers is enough to write home about. Being solid oak it is indeed a heavy piece of furniture which is rare to find in today's market. The delivery by White Glove went off without a hitch. They actually delivered it earlier than the time frame window which they gave. I am very happy with the product, needless to say.

No buyers Remorse!
 from California,  Aug 23, 2010

It seemed like a lot of money, but this chest is beautiful and functional. The only reason I did not give it five stars is the drawers are not on tracks. This being said it is so well constructed that it doesn't hamper the drawers function - and it may never. I have only had it a couple of weeks and the drawers have not caught or been hung up at all. It may be a concern in damper climates than California, hence the 4 stars rather than 5. It is sold wood, it is everything the description says and I would buy it again in a heartbeat. It has really helped with my messy bedroom now that I have the space to put so much away and is beautiful besides. I can't walk by it without stroking the smoothness and beauty or it.

Great First Experience
from Angleton, Texas,  Jun 21, 2010

I was nervous about ordering such an expensive and large piece of furniture over the internet. I have to say it was a great experience. There was some damage in delivery to my dresser which caused a delay in delivery (took about 6 weeks) but Overstock made sure it was repaired before I received it. The delivery company employees were very careful in the delivery of my dresser and my home. They unloaded it, unwrapped it and had me check it before the delivery process was complete. The quality of the furniture is better than anything I found in my search for this piece within a 50 mile radius of my home. The biggest skeptic my husband loves it too.

This was one of the best purchases I've made on O-Stock. Solid, well-made, beautiful. I researched the price on the web and this was below market value. It took about 6 weeks to get to me, but it was well worth the wait. The delivery was white glove service.

love it
from Half Moon Bay, Ca,  Mar 12, 2010

This dresser is everything I had hoped it would be. Beautifully constructed. Love the cedar when you open the drawers (whicih open nicely) It took about a month to arrive which was expected. We received a phone call from Overstock re: delivery abou 2 weeks prior to delivery. It is very heavy but the men who brought it were very good and it was in it's new home safe and sound. So nice after assembeling the last several orders to have this dresser already and waiting to be used. Definatly reccomend this dresser.

my mulechest
 from Texas,  Oct 22, 2009

This dresser is beautiful; very well built and attractive. I would highly recommend. One flaw; it arrived damaged. On the front corner, it appears the plastic wrapping was applied before the clear coat was dry; the plastic seeped into the grain of the wood. The box it was in seemed to be damaged from a forklift and penetrated through, leaving a noticeable scrape on the side. We took pictures of the damages before it was removed from the truck and the delivery person noted in writing on the delivery invoice. I could not not return the item due to a pending surgery that couldn't prevent the delay. We are hoping Overstock.com will within reason give me some credit for the depreciation due to damages.
