Sleep in style on this beautiful wooden queen-size bed from Milton. The bed features a solid wood frame for strength, tastefully finished in a rich chestnut color. The design includes a slat-bottom construction for mattress-only use....more
Purchased the bed for Christmas for my fiance - had to get email updates because the bed kept selling out. My best buy on Overstock. This is one of the nicest beds ever, period. I could see it in the West Elm or Room & Board or Crate & Barrel catalogs (for $1200 plus, naturally). It is truly sturdy (SOLID wood - absolutely no particle board - and it doesn't move or wiggle around!!!) The rubberwood has a beautiful grain! It was so securely packaged (came in two LARGE and HEAVY boxes) NOTHING was damaged at all! It took my fiance 3-4 hrs. to put together with no power tools whatsoever. The worst problem was fitting the headboard to the rest of the bed. One note: you don't need a box spring with this bed - and the thinner and lower profile the mattress, the better. The only thing I can complain about is that I ended up wishing I'd bought one for myself! The color is gorgeous - between a chestnut and espresso, very glowy. The style is somewhere between Modern and Asian, with a little Wright thrown in there, too. You will get a ton of compliments - as long as you have a lower-profile mattress, note, probably not a pillow top, because it obscures the headboard, which is not as tall as it could be...
One note: Bed will be very difficult to take apart once, or if, we move. I recommend bolting it together and leaving it where it is!!!
The Milton Bed is excellent in appearance and the finish is very good. It is well engineered for strenght and does not have any wobble at all. The supplied allen keys are not sufficient for timely assembly of the bed, especially the headboard. Luckily, I have a set of ball-end allen keys and found them indespensible for assembling the headboard. Before attempting to assemble the bed, buy 3/16" and 5/32" ball-end allen keys, some wood glue for the dowels (the supplied "Crazy Glue" is does NOTHING) and a rubber mallet. I assembled it in 2 hours by myself but with their supplied tools, it would have taken at least another hour to assemble the headboard and another half hour for the bed rails. If you intend to use this bed for a foam mattress, be aware that you will also need to buy 2 60"x40" pieces of 1/4" plywood as the mattress support grid is spaced out with 3 1/4" between each of the 2 3/4" slats. If you put the foam mattress on this support, it will eventually ooze out the bottom between the slats. I am very satisfied with the bed and feel that is an excellent value. If I didn't have the extra tools on hand, I know that my frustration level with the assembly issues would have canelled out my positive fellings about the bed. Thanks for the good deal, Overstock.
I'm completely satisfied with the Milton Bed. It's both sturdy and beautiful and arrives expertly packaged so there are no scratches in the wood. I bought a pillow top mattress (18.5") to go on it, and while it is true that a high profile mattress will cover a bit of the headboard, it's still looks great. I do recommend two people for assembly. I did most of it by myself and it was not easy. Also, be aware that in addition to the tools that come with it (various sized Allen wrenches) you will also need a rubber mallet for pounding dowels, plus a drill or electric screwdriver as there are a few screw holes that are not drilled out enough to do by hand. Also, the slats that go across the bottom are not pre-drilled, so if you want to attach them you will need the electric screwdriver. I highly recommend this bed.
Just a few points not covered extensively elsewhere...
This is not something you'll want to fling together in a half hour. Taking your time and doing it right, this bed should serve you well for many years. The strength and overall stability of this bed is heavily dependent on the slats tying everything together. My advice is to pre-drill your pilot holes into the slat support rail. (the slats themselves are pre-drilled with countersunk holes, making this step easy) If you don't, you risk splitting the rail, as all the screws are roughly lined up down its entire length. The instructions mention spacing the slats approximately 80mm apart. For a quick and easy gauge, use a tennis ball canister flipped upside down. Using this for a spacer between the slats while you drill the pilot holes ensures the slats are evenly spaced when you're done.
Beware, the instructions have a couple of errors on page 5 (mine did anyway) but nothing that should fully derail you, as long as you're able to think spatially and you've skimmed over the instructions fully before starting.
The kit comes with "super glue". I passed on this and used a quality wood glue, but I only used it for the top caps on the headboard. The assembly of the head and foot board merely uses dowels to properly guide the fasteners together. Not sure why they'd advise you to use the glue here, as there's already 12 bolts holding the basic frame together. If you pay close attention to the head and foot board, you'll see holes on one side of each. This should make it obvious which way to orient them during assembly. Should you use glue here, disassembly will be less than fun. To repeat what others have mentioned many times, the bed is gorgeous and sturdy. Don't be in a hurry and it should stay this way for a long time.
How did the color on site compare with the actual product? Seemed fine to me, but monitors are notoriously inaccurate for judging color

This is an OUTSTANDING deal! You cannot find a bed this nice for under a grand. IMPORTANT! If you order this bed, do yourself a favor. Buy a flexible extension for your drill, and a 4mm & 5mm hex head for it. It will make assembly a breeze. Otherwise you hafta use the generic hex tool included which will take a month of turning.
The bed was absolutely gorgeous straight out the box. The instructions weren't the best, but they were usable. I've never put anything together that had great instructions so I didn't count off for that.
I suggest you buy your own set of Allen Wrenches. The ones they send with the hardware are awkward to use and really hard on the hands. I already had a set to use, so we didn't have much of a problem. I also suggest you buy a set of furniture leveling feet that screw in for the center support legs. The ones provided weren't long enough to actually meet the floor. I have laminate flooring so I bought a set of furniture leveling feet with the felt already on the bottom. These had a wider base and once attached to center support legs offered much better support than the leveling feet sent with the hardware. (I had no trouble finding feet with felt or "slider" feet for carpet at XXXXX XXXXXX)
It does take 2 people to put this bed together. I don't see how one person could do it by themselves. It took me and my helper about 2 hours to fully assemble the bed.
The bed is absolutely gorgeous! It's completely sturdy once you get everything tightened down. I have a standard queen inner spring mattress on it and it's fantastic.
It really complements the Asian Zen style of my room. I am thrilled with the bed and completely recommend it to anyone who wants an Asian style platform bed.
Best packaging ever seen.
4 peg hols were over drilled on the head board.
Careful with the corners when walking around the bed. After 2 bloody shins I learned to respect the bed.
Have XXXXXX cut 1/4" plywood if you are using a memory foam mattress.
We loved the look of the bed online and once we got it home and got it assembled it was even better then what we thought. We keep looking at it and saying wow this really is a beautiful bed. The bed was for my daughter and she loves it just as much as we do. The height is perfect and low to the ground so its easy for her to get on and off no problem. I would defiantly recommend this bed frame to anyone, we are glad we bought it and the best part was the price. Good quality and great look.
I can not say enough about how beautiful this bed is. It is also strong, and sturdy, a real piece of furniture that would easily sell in a high end furniture store for a grand or more. The wood grain is lovely and slightly warmer in color than depicted on site. The headboard is not especially high, so I recommend a low profile mattress so as much of the headboard as possible is seen. I had a few days to observe the bed while waiting for my new memory foam mattress to arrive. The styling of the footboard legs cause them to jut out some, and I can see that bumping shins or toes is a possibility until I get used to it. As for assembly, after reading other's reviews I was nervous. I enlisted the help of a handy and patient male friend to assemble the bed. It took him about 2 1/2 hours working alone. He did comment that headboard assembly was tedious and annoying due to the silly allen wrench design. He thought a phillips head screw would have made more sense. Directions were clear. He laid everything out prior to assembly. A drill and a rubber mallet are a must, especially for slats. He used very little glue. Be prepared to take your time, and all should go well. I highly recommend this bed. Everyone who has seen mine loves it. Solid wood, fabulous price, a real thing of beauty. You can't go wrong.
How did the color on site compare with the actual product? Lighter, somewhat warmer with slight reddish tones

Great frame, doesn't need a box spring or any additional frame, just a mattress.
Great style and ideal for small rooms, as it is visually "light". The bed is sturdy, both my kids like to jump on it and they are not gentle !
I put it together all by myself, it takes some time but it wasn't hard at all.
I have owned this bed for years and absolutely love it - but during my last military move lost the screws to put it together. There should be 12 screws with 12 washers...that is all I am missing. Can you all please send me the contact information for the company so I can get replacement screws?

Any idea how thick the mattress is that is depicted in the photo of this beautiful frame? Trying to get an idea of how low a profile we are looking at.lao521 on Jul 5, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello lao521! This bed is beautiful! Unfortunately, we don't currently have the height of the mattress shown. This has a slat system, so no boxspring is required. You can use any height mattress that you like. I hope this helps. Thanks for shopping with us.overstockcustomercare1 on Jul 12, 2013

How deep is the slatted support? Will a 10" latex foam matress a) sink through the slats as previously mentioned memory foam will and b) be too high and obscure some of the headboard design. Thank you in advance.veegaa on Dec 11, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
You can purchase additional slats at a home improvement store or sheets of plywood to go over the slats to prevent the oozing. No, it should not be too high.overstockcustomercare1 on Dec 11, 2012

What is the construction at the joints? Do they have metal-to-metal slots and hinges? Thanks.akvee on Sep 3, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
The headboard panel of this queen-size bed from Milton uses mortise and tenon joint construction. Because the headboard is knocked down and ready for assembly, we use JCBC screws to put the headboard panel and headboard legs together. The side rails are pre-assembled with metal L brackets, which are attached to the headboard and footboard using JCBC screws.overstockcustomercare1 on Sep 9, 2012
How many slats does the bed have, and are the slats tied together? Is there a picture of the slats?akvee on Sep 3, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
The bed has total 14 pieces of wooden slats, and they are loose packed. Our customers are required to place them on the side-rail support and secure them with screws as illustrated in the instruction manual. Unfortunately, we do not have any additional pictures of the itemoverstockcustomercare1 on Sep 9, 2012
I did not weigh the frame, but it is solid wood, and the boxes it came in were heavy (70lbs plus). It takes two adults to move the bed.rnrgroup on Dec 7, 2012
Can this frame be used with memory foam beds? Certain reviews say the gap between slats is too wide. If so, do you sell anything that can be placed on top of the slats to prevent the memory foam from "oozing" between slats?pmleahy on May 4, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
This is designed for use with just a mattress. If it is memory foam you can buy additional slats at Home Depot or Lowes or put plywood over the slats.overstockcustomercare1 on Dec 11, 2012
