Merlot Butterfly Leaf Dining Table

Love it, love it, love it! Out of all the furniture I got on overstock when I bought my new house, this was THE piece that got all the compliments when I had a housewarming party. I think the greatness of this table managed to convince some of my friends who won't buy furniture online to change their minds. Assembly was easy--just the legs needed to be attached--and using the leaf is super easy too. I love not having to take the leaf out and store it somewhere; it just folds under the table. I carefully shopped for narrower chairs so I can get all 8 to fit at the table. They don't tuck under all the way, but they don't look squished either. (Try the Shino leather parsons chairs if you're interested.) I am SO happy I bought this!Note: in the month I've had it, it hasn't gotten marked up at all, even when kids have visited. But I've been careful with heat since I read on other reviews that the top surface is sensitive.

I bought the set as pictured, table, six chairs and bench. We love this set. The quality of the table was not perfect, and I saw the reviews stating that it is a softish laquer, so we called a glazier when it first arrived and had a glass top made for it. Best idea ever. Table is in great condition, chairs have a few stains, but we also have a lot of dinner parties and a one year old. The set it now three years old and we still receive compliments.

I recently purchased this table. The table is heavy and the quality is very nice for the price. For some reason, the table looks best with the leaf out -- very impressive size. With the leaf in, the table looks like an ordinary table, which is okay -- I just like it better with the leaf out. Table can seat eight comfortably.

I have had this set for about 1 year, and in that time I have found it to be of very poor quality with respect to the finish. This table is finished with a very soft lacquer, which will not stand up to day-to-day use. It scratches easily, and it has virtually no resistance to heat. For example, one time I had a candelabra on the table burning tapered candles. A drop of wax fell on the table top, and it dissolved the lacquer down to the bare wood. One drop of wax ruined the table top! I have never before seen such a poorly finished dining room table. I decided to refinish the top, and upon stripping it, I found that the asian hardwood-- essentially rubber wood-- had been patched from the factory with wood filler to fill in the gaps. The finish also has a base of walnut stain with a colored lacquer, so it is virtually impossible to match the color with a new stain (due to the two-part refinishing process that is used by the factory). First the wood is patched-- gaps in the wood are filled with wood filler at the factory-- then a walnut stain is applied. Then the factory sprays on a "merlot" lacuqer finish, which is slightly transparent-- hence the two-part finish. This hides the poor quality of the wood that is used in construction. I've decided to throw out the complete set and purchase something else. I strongly recommend that this garbage be removed from Overstock, as it has been nothing but a disappointment.

Although I received this table with some damage, it is absolutely beautiful and EXACTLY what we had been looking for. The color is as described and shown in the pic and matches our other furniture perfectly. As others have stated it is heavy but I did not have any problems assembling and setting it up by myself. The butterfly leaf is GREAT but I imagine we will leave it set up as a square. As far as the damage goes, Overstock customer service is absolutely wonderful to work with and very quick to have issues resolved. I decided to keep the table rather than send it back as I can deal with a scratch and scuff (both of which can be repaired). I really could not be more pleased with Overstock.com. Thanks!
