I have had this set for about 1 year, and in that time I have found it to be of very poor quality with respect to the finish. This table is finished with a very soft lacquer, which will not stand up to day-to-day use. It scratches easily, and it has virtually no resistance to heat. For example, one time I had a candelabra on the table burning tapered candles. A drop of wax fell on the table top, and it dissolved the lacquer down to the bare wood. One drop of wax ruined the table top! I have never before seen such a poorly finished dining room table. I decided to refinish the top, and upon stripping it, I found that the asian hardwood-- essentially rubber wood-- had been patched from the factory with wood filler to fill in the gaps. The finish also has a base of walnut stain with a colored lacquer, so it is virtually impossible to match the color with a new stain (due to the two-part refinishing process that is used by the factory). First the wood is patched-- gaps in the wood are filled with wood filler at the factory-- then a walnut stain is applied. Then the factory sprays on a "merlot" lacuqer finish, which is slightly transparent-- hence the two-part finish. This hides the poor quality of the wood that is used in construction. I've decided to throw out the complete set and purchase something else. I strongly recommend that this garbage be removed from Overstock, as it has been nothing but a disappointment.

My husband & I searched & searched for the perfect square table that could seat 8. This was definitely it! We bought the table & the 8 matching chairs & absolutely love it! It is a very heavy and well-made piece of furniture. We love the way the leaf hides in the table (very quick & easy to do), but we like the table so much we leave it as the full square all the time! Anyone & everyone who sees the table compliments it. The color is very rich. We are very happy with our purchase! I have yet to see another table that rivals this one! Very elegant! Another perk about having a square table like this: when you have a dinner party, everyone is the same distance from each other. So, it makes conversation very easy & enjoyable. No one feels stuck on "the end." If you like the way it looks, buy it!

My dinning room is kind of small and that's why I ordered this table. It can be extended when I have guests. The table and matching chairs arrived pretty quickly and took me only 15 minutes to assemble the table. I ordered the table and matching chairs seperately because it is less expensive than ordering a set.

I bought the set as pictured, table, six chairs and bench. We love this set. The quality of the table was not perfect, and I saw the reviews stating that it is a softish laquer, so we called a glazier when it first arrived and had a glass top made for it. Best idea ever. Table is in great condition, chairs have a few stains, but we also have a lot of dinner parties and a one year old. The set it now three years old and we still receive compliments.

The table is awesome. It's solid, stable, and a designed well. The issue I have is with the matching Merlot chairs. I'll post my review for the specific chairs where they belong.

Comfortably seats 8 with the butterfly leaf in. We love the square feature of the table.

I loved the look of this table, though the reviews saying the surface was vulnerable to scratches were right. Solution: I bought two pieces of 1/4" plate glass, one to cover the table when folded, and another the size of the leaf to use when it's in place. That didn't come cheaply, but now I really love the table and have no fears about damaging the surface with heat, liquid, or scratches. The leaf mechanism is quite slick. I didn't understand how it worked from the description or reviews, but I'm pleased with the design. To use it, you pull the table halves apart to reveal the leaf stored underneath, folded in half. It's not removable. You flip it over (it's connected to the table under-frame) on its pivots, unfold it, and it's right where it needs to be. I do have two complaints. One, there was some damage when it arrived, though not enough to go through the hassle of returning it. There are some pieces of wood that are not visible unless you look under the table, and one of these was significantly damaged (though not structurally). The other complaint I have is that the trim on the leaf was misaligned and not well-attached (it's attached with skinny nails to the leaf) though I was able to fix this completely with a few blows from a hammer. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase, once I bought the glass and fixed up the trim. The table is very solid and a wonderful dark color, plus I like not having to find a place to store the leaf.

Love it, love it, love it! Out of all the furniture I got on overstock when I bought my new house, this was THE piece that got all the compliments when I had a housewarming party. I think the greatness of this table managed to convince some of my friends who won't buy furniture online to change their minds. Assembly was easy--just the legs needed to be attached--and using the leaf is super easy too. I love not having to take the leaf out and store it somewhere; it just folds under the table. I carefully shopped for narrower chairs so I can get all 8 to fit at the table. They don't tuck under all the way, but they don't look squished either. (Try the Shino leather parsons chairs if you're interested.) I am SO happy I bought this!Note: in the month I've had it, it hasn't gotten marked up at all, even when kids have visited. But I've been careful with heat since I read on other reviews that the top surface is sensitive.

I recently purchased this table. The table is heavy and the quality is very nice for the price. For some reason, the table looks best with the leaf out -- very impressive size. With the leaf in, the table looks like an ordinary table, which is okay -- I just like it better with the leaf out. Table can seat eight comfortably.

Although I received this table with some damage, it is absolutely beautiful and EXACTLY what we had been looking for. The color is as described and shown in the pic and matches our other furniture perfectly. As others have stated it is heavy but I did not have any problems assembling and setting it up by myself. The butterfly leaf is GREAT but I imagine we will leave it set up as a square. As far as the damage goes, Overstock customer service is absolutely wonderful to work with and very quick to have issues resolved. I decided to keep the table rather than send it back as I can deal with a scratch and scuff (both of which can be repaired). I really could not be more pleased with Overstock.com. Thanks!

I love this table. I have been looking for a dining table for more than a few months and had my eye on this one for a while. I am so glad I made this purchase. The color is true to the picture online and the table is sturdy and heavy. I love the leaf that hides in the table very convenient. I am going to purchase the chairs. I hope they are just as nice.

It took only about two weeks for the table to arrive. The delivery was just as schedule and the freight company was easy to deal with. The table had to be assembled and looks beautiful now. It is quite big when you open it up. You can easily fit 8 people around it! It is a great purchase!

Before you buy the "SET", proce out the table and chairs seperate, it is alot cheaper. The Table is really pretty and heavy, but hard to keep clean with children and messes. It is a really beautiful color and very nice with the leaf folded up. The chairs came with marks and cracks in the wood. But overall very nice for the price!! Don't forget to price the chairs alone from the table to save $.

This table is well worth the money. It is solid and, as others have mentioned, heavy. Delivery time was reasonable and assembly consists of tightening 8 bolts to attach the legs--a breeze! Although it is a gorgeous deep, rich color, the table's real charm is the butterfly leaf; it is both easy and convenient to expand. There is also some nice detailing on the table apron that isn't apparent in the online photo. I purchased 6 of the Ellis chairs to complete the set; it's too bad they aren't as solid or as easy to assemble.

The table was ok once we got two of the bolts properly aligned. This was done in a friend's shop so that delayed the procedure. Looks good now!!

The table arrived on my doorstep just eight days after ordering. It weighed 160 lbs. and took two of us to move into the house. The only assembly required was attaching the legs, which took about 10 minutes. The finished product is lovely and just what I was looking for. It fits well in my small dining room. However, when opened to full size, it seats eight comfortably. The reason for my 4-star review is that there was, evidently, a knot in the wood that was filled but left a minor indentation on the table top. It doesn't bother me, but it drives my husband crazy. We ordered the chairs separately (cheaper than ordering the table and four chairs as a set), and although attractive and comfortable, they are difficult to assemble.

We've been looking around for a sleek and extendable table, this was it. The leaf folds and tucks under the table nicely. Sits 8 people comfortably when extended. Solid wood, pretty sturdy (although we haven't moved it around much since it's pretty heavy). The table got a small chip on the corner during delivery, we could've refused it at delivery, but we didn't want to go through the hassle. So far, we are very happy with our purchase.

The merlot butterfly table arrived today, it is a gorgeous table! Adding the legs was a breeze. This piece should last a very long time. Very heavy and solid, but with a style that works great as a transitional item. Very classy, I'm very pleased.
