Yes it does arrive tightly packed and does not have a 'cover' - it is raw hi-density foam. But, it is comfortable and is cooler than other products. (My daughter has a different brand that I get to use now and again). It does need to air out to decompress and I did find that the actual depth was not more than 3.5". It is comfortable and my backache has gone away. I am using it on top of a sleep number system bed.

I bought this for my girlfriend about three weeks ago. She could not make it through the night with out waking up about four to five times a night. Now she is sleeping through the night and waking up and her body no longer aces. She will even take a nap now and before that was unheard of.

I bought the mem-cool 4 inch topper for my son and daughter in law for christmas ,as they where speaking of having to buy a new matress and box spring .I had ordered a mem topper only months earlier for myself and fell in love with it .I had since bought one for the pull out which my sister thanked me for on her last visit.The kids do love it except my son says it isa little HOT ....so I don't know about the mem -"cool" part and also how drastically the prices fell after christmas so it was only my wallet saying ouch not their backs. Those are the only reasons I'm not giving 5stars I would definitely recommend everyone buy this product
