  • Gorgeous shade

This canopy is stunning in appearance and construction. It is clean and architectural in feeling. The picture does not do it justice. To boot, the beige is exactly the same shade as our stucco house. The only regret is that Overstock doesn't seem to have the larger, 17' x 17' size! carmen

  • Shade FINALLY!

We have open space around our house and I put this off the kitchen door so we can finally use the patio! Plus it helps to keep the kitchen cooler. My husband wants one now to put outside the garage so he can work out there in comfort. I use to sew this type of fabric and the quality is excellent. I see using this for many years.

  • Square Sail Sun Shade not too Shabby

I purchased a Square Sail and was very impressed with the sturdiness of construction and the attachment points. I was leery of the attachment points and if there was reinforcement along the whole length of the material. I was favorably impressed with both. A triangular attachment eye of what appears to be 304 stainless steel, approximately 5/16" diameter on each corner. These eyes are welded shut and attached to the fabric with a robust nylon mesh strap that is sewn along the entire edge of the sail. The sail came with all the hardware to install it, turnbuckles, nylon rope, concrete anchors and eye bolts. The material is somewhat translucent, I purchased yellow, giving a very cheerful, natural looking hue underneath. As expected, it is very shady underneath. The material is NOT waterproof, although it appears to resist water. I am going to test a section with marine canvas waterproofing spray to see if I can make it more resistant to water. The sail is not square when you lay it flat on the ground. It is narrower in the center than the ends. This is something I did not expect in my design but it looks very nice. I was so pleased with it that I ordered a second one.

  • CAUTION! Do NOT use the nylon rope included!!

I've owned this sail for aprox 2 seasons. When I installed it originally I had to purchase turnbuckles and better quality rope clamps as the ones that come with this are poorly made and excuse the pun "Chinese" The mistake I made was using the nylon rope that was included to hang it. Just yesterday I learned a painful lesson! I was tensioning the canopy as it had begun to sag and "snap" the nylon rope broke in the middle and the turnbuckle hit me in the forehead with some serious force and gashed my head open. There was not even that much tension applied to the rope, I'm going to guess maybe 10-20lbs of force. The hardware I purchased at my local hardware store is capable of 275lb of force. I figured I would never even get close to this with the canopy so I should never have to worry about the hardware. Little did I know the nylon rope is made so cheaply, it doesn't even feel like nylon, more like plastic. I can hold several strands in my hand and just a little force breaks them. Just be aware of this when installing. I ended up purchasing 3/16 stainless steel cable with the proper end ties to make loops. I'm just glad I wasn't on the ladder when it broke or I might not be here to write this review today. Just remember when installing this there is quit a bit of tension holding this thing make sure you know what you are doing when you hang it and wear safety glasses. I didn't have any on when it broke and I was very fortunate that it didn't hit me in the eye, it could of been a much more serious injury.

  • Be Prepared

We love the look and purpose of our new sunshade. Unfortunately, it was not the easiest thing to put up. The hardware included didn't even work with the shade so we had to purchase all new hardware. Luckily, my husband is pretty handy and we have great neighbors. We attached it to our house and steel beams we added to our deck. We've had it for a couple of weeks and it seems to hold up well to wind and rain, as we just had a storm pass through. The shade itself seems to be very durable with sturdy seams and D ring attachment. I do like the shade but you may need help figuring how to best put it up as well as help getting it up. Make sure there is a center peak by putting two opposite corners high and the other two low so the rain will roll off and not make a pond in the center. Be prepared to buy hardware that works with the item. Make sure where you're attaching the shade is at least a few feet larger than the size of the shade so you can tighten up the slack easily. (notice the picture has the shade between trees that are very distant from each other) That's my experience. Enjoy.

We put our square sail up easily. We ordered white so it would be nice and bright while sitting under it. We live in Florida so the white works very well. It gives us a great place to sit and enjoy the outdoors all year.

  • Great Shade

I bought this shade to go with another one that I purchased but never used. I'm using it to create cover for a stone patio that is off the lower level of house. I didn't use the screws and cords that came with it but black bungee cords that I purchased elsewhere. This way way it can be put up and taken down very easy. It looks great, creates shade but is not waterproof.

After having many expensive gazebo rip with heavy winds, I ordered this for the area on our deck. We wound up bungee cording it to the gazebo frame and it is perfect and half the cost of a replacement gazebo cover. Next year we will build a frame work for holding the sun shade.

What is the GSM of the polyethylene dwt945 on May 12, 2014
Subscribe to Answers
Answer This Question

The weight of just the sail is 5-8 lbs per the answers to a previous question. The sail is 11' 10" square. Based on that an online calculator has GSM between 174 and 278, a big range. This is also the GSM for a low density polyethylene material as stated in the product description. The product description states "extra heavy" material; note that a HIGH density polyethylene (HDPE) material at 320 GSM is extra heavy and also heavier duty than a 180 GSM low density polyethylene (LDPE). HDPE is what pond liner is usually made of. dwt945 on May 18, 2014

Reviews of the 8 x 8 version of this sail indicate the actual dimensions are more like 6 x 6 ? The info on this one is "Measures 11 feet 10 inches square" Is "Measures 11 feet 10 inches square" the actual end to end measurement of the sail...or....does this include the length of the cords/ropes also ? If I measured just the material part or the sail...is it a true 11 feet 10 inches square...grommet to grommet so to speak ? Thanks trinaz on Feb 6, 2014

Hi trinaz, we confirmed the material is measured 11 ft 10 inches square (grommet to grommet). The problem being that the sides recede from the corners making it appear smaller when completely set up. We hope this clears things up. overstockcustomercare1 on Feb 26, 2014

Answer This Question

I'm not sure how to anchor the sail in your particular application. If you are a dyi type, you could approach someone at the local hardware store for advice. I have found them to be willing to help. My guess is that you will need to drill holes and drive an anchor into the holes, Then mount a ring or "eye" to the wall. This is going to have to be substanial to stand up to the stresses. If you know or can find a reputable handy-man, it shouldn't be a big job, but may cost you an hour or two of time. By the way, this provides shade, but is woven, not solid. I'd describe it as shade with some sunlight penetration, not like standing under a solit roof. More like under a tree where a little light gets through. karenrenee on Apr 14, 2013

When we installed ours, we anchored it to the wood trim we had with bolts, but I am sure you can show someone at a hardware store like Home depot or Lowes what you have and they can help you to get the supplies needed to installed correctly. Our had withstood lots of rain and strong winds and still holding strong 5 years later. Good Luck! olivers2 on Jul 10, 2013

The shade is made of low density polyethylene. Thank you for your interest. overstockcustomercare1 on Mar 29, 2013

low desity polyethylene is accurate, but doesn't tell you what it is like. It feels like a stiff canvas fabric with a slick finish. The fabric after two years in the Texas sun is not showing age. It is not "solid" and allows some sun through, but it is adequate to shade -like a tree, not a roof. karenrenee on Apr 14, 2013

Thank you for your inquiry. Although they often thrive in completely sunny locations, hibiscus do not actually need as much direct sunlight as is commonly thought. As long as the plants receive a few hours of direct sunlight they should be ok. overstockcustomercare1 on Mar 19, 2013
