Chairs have to be assembled. While tightening one of the bolts holding the front leg on, the leg cracked, before the lock washer flattened out. The site doesn't tell you the kind of wood, but it is very brittle. Outside of this problem, we are very satisfied with our chairs. The chairs appear to be very sturdy.
