Delaroche may be best known today for his painting 'The Young Martyr' which hangs in Louvre, Paris.
Depicting the death of a young Christian martyr in the 3rd century A.D. during the reign of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, this painting was completed a year before his death in 1856. Le Jeune Martyre' has been called the 'Christian Ophelia' since it resembles Pre-Raphaelite artists portrayals of Ophelia from Shakespeare's Hamlet.

This is an exquisite piece! I have long admired this artist/piece. When I ordered this framed reproduction, I had no idea I would get a piece so rich in quality. The print is reproduced on canvas; the framing is beautiful, and the craftsmanship in putting the piece together is exemplary. Hauntingly Beautiful
She is gorgeous! I LOVE this painting! It does emit some shine when the light hits it but not sure if this is a big deal? Otherwise it is more beautiful than the online photo. Just like another reviewer said 'it captures the soul of a woman'. It is a very symbolic painting. The frame is darker and richer in appearance than the color depicted on my computer screen. It's romantic and evocative. Just my style. Thanks Overstock!
