Keyless Locks
Doors are the first detail your guests will see when they visit your home, so choose an entry door system that introduces the style of the rest of the house while still fulfilling its primary functions: keeping the house cat in and the cat burglar out. Door security is an ever-more important issue, especially for the front door and back door, where someone will most likely try to get in.
A home keyless entry system is a great deterrent. Keyless locks come in three basic types. Some keyless door locks use smart cards, like those in hotels. Other keyless lock systems have a touch pad and a passcode in place of the key. The fanciest keyless entry locks use fingerprint recognition, also called biometrics--very 21st Century! Keyless locks can be integrated into the door knob or be a separate unit. (Of course, sooner or later, you may still figure out how to lock yourself out, so have a backup plan.)
Choosing exterior doors can be a challenge of home improvement design, but choosing a lock should not be: get the biggest, toughest, nastiest looking lock you can afford (which, at Overstock.com's low prices, could be quite an animal!). Criminals aren't stupid but they are lazy; they're looking for an easy mark. Deadbolts and a keyless entry would make them work harder for their booty, so they'll probably pass you by. In fact, a keyless entry system might even save you money on homeowner's insurance. (What--you think Overstock.com only wants you to save money when you buy stuff?)
While considering door security, also consider peepholes. They may seem a little film noir, but it's always better to open the door after you figure out who is on the other side. Keyless lock, deadbolts and peephole--it's enough to make a grown cat burglar cry.
