This system is not meant for anything less than perfectly straight walls. Alas, I do not have perfectly straight walls and so the installation was a bear! Suffice it to say that I bought two of these systems (one for each side of the closet) and I ended up paying a handyman more than the cumulative price of those two sets for the installation. It was brutal. It looks great, but- please- make sure your walls are completely straight or consider another product. Also, this product scratches incredibly easily. A felt tip marker is included, but, I wish they would have make it a bit more durable. Last, John Louis sticks their logo on several of the pieces with what must be industrial strength adhesive. I am unable to get it off- and the stickers (they are really thick, like they wanted them to resemble plaques) are not on straight. That is pretty bad considering this was not a cheap product. It sounds like I have a lot of negatives, but overall I am happy with the product. Even happier that it is finally installed!!
I found this closet system easy to install, with clear instructions contained in an easy to read manual. I was very impressed with the Red Mahogany finish on the 100% wood tower pieces. There is no MDF or other wood by-products of any kind. The fact that you can order drawers in different sizes and place the shelves in any configuration that you choose was also a deciding factor. I compared prices with other closet systems, but most of them were not all wood products, and the color choices were limited.
My 2nd John Louis closet, first being my daughter's that worked well.
Pros: This one is is easier to install, hangs solidly on your wall. If your wall is uneven, ANY modular closet system will give you fits no matter who makes it.
Easy to configure to fit your available space.
Metal hardware is ample and appropriate sizes, plenty of leftovers. I LOVE their wall anchors, easy to install and solid.
After hanging the tower, you will proceed to hang adjacent fixed shelves for supporting your closet rods. This reveals a design "oversight" if you hang a fixed shelf at the same level as the top of the tower (most people will), and involves a shelf fastener probably hitting a tower fastener at this intersection. Take your time, be patient, offset your shelf fastening screw (that holds the shelf bracket), and accept the outcome.
Finish is ultra-thin and easily scratched. A refinishing pen is provided.
Only 2 adjustable shelves, so I cut a 4-foot leftover fixed shelf and made 2 more adjustables, extra hardware provided. Otherwise, you can buy extras of most anything.
Worst: their instructions are strange at best. You will likely need a helper to mount the tower, instructions say only to "mount it on the wall" but offer no further clue. It's bulky and floppy until mounted, take your time. After installing my daughter's closet, I looked at these parts, then the instructions, and then threw the instructions aside. It turned out well, but not easy for a novice home owner.
The instructions were somewhat difficult to figure out. The pictures were not very helpful and it was tricky figuring out what part was what. The packages were labeled but the instrucions did not utilize the labels.
Once we figured it out, it turned out very nice. Seems to be a solid closet system.
Although I ordered the full closet 12-inch system, I received two 16-inch deep shelves. The color is vibrant and rich, indeed a good finish, but the wrong item after all. When I contacted customer service to return this product I was first told that I would be charged for the return about $XX. I kept explaining that I received the wrong item and if I received two shelves for $XXX, then they have misrepresented the product, since it its description details all of the shelves and bars that would come with it. I asked if I could be sent a new one and unfortunately it is out of stock (maybe that's the reason I never got mine in the first place). Now I have to wait until they receive these two shelves back so that I can have my money back :( Since they do not if they're going to have this product back on stock, I wish they would have compromise and send me that 16-inch system for the same price, I mean they already send me two shelves that I now have to return...
Took us 3-4 hours to install 2 of these in a walk in closet. Watched the video on their web page first, very handy. Very impressive when we finished. It is easy to mark it but the touch up pen came in handy. We only had a few marks. The second organizer went up in less than an hour after we knew what we were doing. It is very high end looking. I love it.
Does the closet have to be fastened to the wall? I live in an apartment and cannot drill into the wallchelsante100 on Aug 9, 2014Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello, yes, you will need to anchor the sections to the wall.
However, we do carry stand alone shelves and closet organizers that hang directly from your existing closet rod. I'll put the item numbers here for you to view and please check the tool bar on the right of these items to see other potential organizers that do not require you to drill into the wall.

I have an area that is 14 inches deep and 5 feet wide, but there is no stud on one of the side walls. Can the unit be anchored into the back and one side only?anewth on Mar 3, 2014Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Just use the wall anchors that come with the unit. I have put up 4 of these units and never had any problems other than crooked walls. Of course they aren't made for children to climb on, even though they are very sturdy.candymdirk on Mar 4, 2014

I have a walk-in closet, and I want to install this product on the wall with the door in it. In other words, the storage will not run from one perpendicular wall corner to the other. Does the product have to be anchored to both adjacent walls, or can it be anchored to one and left on the main wall where the door starts?ishmaelmoritz on May 20, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
No, the Simplicity Organizer does not have to go from one side wall to another. It can be left open on one or both ends.
