For the price, these chairs are terrible quality. The set is a year old and the chairs look worn and five years old. We don't even use them that often, but they are outside in Texas, so maybe this wood can't take the heat. The chairs are heavy, sturdy, and the hardware seems to be holding up, but the wood itself is just not that durable. The finish is scratched like a cat went crazy, though we only moved them from time to time to sweep the patio. I also don't think they're that comfortable in any position, which is one of the reasons we don't use it that often. The finish is easy to wipe off--they don't appear to have any urethane on them for protection. I would definitely not buy this or any other Royal Tahiti product again and wish I could return them, but it took a year to really see how they would hold up, I feel like it's too late.
We ordered 4 pairs of chairs and they arrived within three days. They are very comfortable and we are pleased with them. They recline, which I could have done without, but I think the UV protected chairs come only in the reclining version. (The cheaper non-UV protected do not recline.) Given their reclinability, they are usable as lounge chairs as well as dining table chairs. WARNING Note that the reason for the big difference in prices between some of the Balau wood chairs is that some are UV protected (as are these) whereas the cheaper ones are typically not so protected. While this fact is stated on Overstock's website, it is not in big letters, and I missed it. An on-line chat with a helpful customer rep clarified the matter. It remains to be seen how resistant to the elements they are, but I shall probably give them an extra coating of varnish/polish for safe keeping.
