I had an older Bissell Proheat for a number of years. When that gave up, my wife wanted to get an Oreck Orbiter dry-cleaning system. We have two dogs which can generate some pretty wet and sticky messes out either end, so I augmented that with a Bissell SpotBot. Recently we had an episode with one of the dogs (came out the front, smelled like it came out the back) which took quite a bit of work to clean up. Since the SpotBot only treats a small area, we had to constantly move it around to treat the area. The SpotBot left the carpets fairly damp, so next we used the dry Oreck orbital cleaner (which requires some dampness for the dry sponge media to work) and worked that into the carpet, let it dry thoroughly, and vacuumed it up. The carpet seemed pretty clean after that, but moving the SpotBot around so much was a great deal of work (nearly two hours). I decided to buy whatever the best carpet steam cleaner on the market was, and ordered myself a Hoover Platinum carpet steam cleaner. After receiving it, I decided to perform an experiment and clean the area that I'd previously cleaned only days ago. WOW. You would not believe the filth that came out of that carpet! And believe me, the foul smell that came from the dirty tank made it very clear that there was plenty of dog mess left in the carpet despite both the extensive SpotBotting AND the orbital dry-cleaning method. I realized that neither of the other methods was actually fully cleaning the carpet (even using both of them together). The machine cleans large areas quickly. In normal cleanup mode, the machine is smart enough to spray water+detergent during forward movement, and water only ("rinse cycle") during reverse movement. The status lights actually show you this as you are using the machine, and it's trivially easy to get the hang of. The "spill pickup" mode is great for wet messes, it activates the vacuum for pickup without running the brushes. Machine cleanup is a bit messy, but it's a bonus that you can take the machine apart to clean it at all. My old Bissell did not come completely apart for cleaning, and some of the dirty water passageways got funky over the years. The carpets are still damp after cleaning, but are dryer than my old Bissell left them. We've sold the SpotBot to a friend for party foul cleanup, and we're thinking of selling the Oreck orbital cleaner as well. This machine is not cheap, but replacing a carpet early due to stains or premature wear is even more expensive. If you're going to go through the trouble of doing it, it pays in the long run to do it right.
We bought this Platinum cleaner to replace an old Hoover which we had used for many years in our rental units. It cleaned just as well as the professional carpet cleaners, and this one is even better. I especially like the rinse feature, which our old model did not have. No soap residue left on the clean carpet!!! We have done our 2,000+ sq. ft. shag carpet twice since purchase, with superb results. I also purchased both the Platinum Pro carpet detergent (online only - very expensive) and some regular carpet detergent, and I do not think the results justify the difference in price between the two detergents. This is a great machine which is MUCH easier to clean up after use than our old Hoover. You will be absolutely flabbergasted at the dirt it removes from your carpet.
I do animal rescue and my carpets upstairs get disgusting fast. I had a mother and her litter of seven completely destroy my carpets. While I plan on doing hardwood floors, I needed something in the meantime to make the carpet bearable. I spent FOUR HOURS using a Bissell Pet Spot Bot on every stain and I thought it worked pretty well. I could still see some residual staining but it got most of the mess up. Then I brought in the Hoover. The Spot Bot is NOTHING in comparison to this machine. Every old stain was completely gone after one pass. The machine is simple to use and has a lot of functionality. I also like that the water and solution compartments are separate. You don't have to move super slowly to get a deep clean which saved me oodles of time. My only warning for any women out there - this machine is somewhat heavy. I didn't have a problem going up and down the stairs with it but it isn't very light. Otherwise, I highly recommend this product. I know it's a high price point but you get what you pay for with this machine. Worth every penny. Well-constructed.
This machine cleans like a professional carpet cleaner and my husband loves running it. If there is any complaint it is heavy, but that is probably why it works so well.
My daughter has this machine, I borrowed it twice. It works fantastic, so I wanted one for myself.
I love this carpet cleaner. I couldn't believe how much dirt and grime was left in the carpet after using a rental cleaner. Never again will I rent. My carpet loves me again and my family love to lay and play on the floor without smelling dirt, and pet dander.
Instruction booklet has some confusing directions. Although many parts of the carpet cleaner can be removed for filling/emptying/cleaning, it is a much more involved process to actually clean a carpet than I was expecting. Removed all the furniture in a bedroom and used the cleaner. The cleaning only took about an a half hour. The process took all day. (I wanted to be sure the carpet was really dry before I put all the furniture back.) Machine works great and does a nice job cleaning. If I had to do it over again, I'm not sure I'd buy a carpet cleaner.
This machine was recommended to me by my daughter. She has an older model. She cleaned my carpets last summer and they came out very clean. I am waiting for warmer weather to use this new machine so that I can open doors and windows for a good airing out.
Overstock has the best products ever for price. We were so happy with this carpet cleaner.
Had bought a Bissell shampooer which seemed to work on regular carpet but I moved and have Berber now and it didn't touch it plus it seemed to get clogged all the time. The Hoover absolutely cleaned everything out of the carpet and I have a dog and it took care of those spots with no problem. The price was a lot less than at Sears and overall thought I got a terrific buy for the money.
