Newer models have washable filter - this not?
from New York, NY,  Aug 27, 2008

Several Honeywell filters, including this one (17000) are now manufactured with a washable main filter. Apparently Honeywell did not change the model number so now some merchants have the older version, which requires filter purchase and replacement, and other merchants have the washable version, which cleans with a vacuum cleaner. Both versions, washable (called "permanent" filter by Honeywell) and replacement-needed, have the 17000 model number. Careful reading of the Overstock description would seem to suggest ("Intelli-check electronic filter change indicator", "Easy filter access for convenient replacement") that they are offering the non-washable version. Since the newer, washable version is available for only a few dollars more (ca. $120), this item is not a good value, thus the low rating. I have purchased the washable version, and I am very pleased. The low rating is entirely related to the need for the price on this item to be lowered to reflect its value in relation to the newer model with vacuum-cleanable main filter (the pre-filter still needs to be replaced).

Quiet? No. Cool? Yes
from Sacramento CA,  Jul 8, 2009

It has a really neat and compact look to it; blows major cool air from the exhaust; is NOT quiet. However, rather than sounding like a vacuum cleaner like many of these things do, it's more like a window fan.As for working as an air filter, I don't see a huge improvement, but I have an especially problematic environment with multiple birds. I'm not ready to pack it up just yet and hope to see more of a change as time goes on. It's only been a month so far. There may be a change I'm not seeing

Satisfied buyer
from Omaha, NE,  May 5, 2009

I just purchased the Honeywell 1700 Quietcare HEPA air purifier from you. I am so satisfied with the service I received from Overstock.com as the prodict arrived within a week and is givig me evcellent results. I am allergic to cats and a HEPA air purifier was recommended to me from my Allergist. This has given me relief and is quiet, attractive and a great value. I would recommend it to any one with allergies to order this.

honeywell air cleaner
from new jersey,  Feb 25, 2009

This is my 10th honeywell since I run them 24/7 in 3 bedrooms since my daughter is asthmatic and we have airborne allergies I have an electrostatic furnace filter but bedrooms need to be as clean as possbile to empty a child;s "allergen bucket " at night since you can not control daytime exposures. Use of a Hepa will reduce doctors' visits and in the case of my daughter reduced medicine needed daily per the pulmonary specialist. It is the best price I've paid for one this size and it is also the quietest Honeywell I have owned. It does not move as much air as some of the loudest ones but can't beat the value. It did have a plastic smell for a week which went away.

Honeywell 17000
from Des Moines, IA,  Sep 3, 2008

The machine is less noisy than other air cleaners I have, more of a soft white noise. The size made it easy to place in the room, and I like the way it looks. I've only had the unit a few weeks, but I have two other Honeywell air cleaners and even the 10 year old one has never had a problem.

HONEYWELL HEPA AIR CLEANER
 from Texas,  May 15, 2008

Overall good product. I researched numerous sites before finally deciding on this product. So far so good. It is a little louder than i thought, but easy to get used to. According to other reviews however, this is one of the quieter models. It seems to be making a difference as my family reports less stuffiness and congestion in the mornings. I WOULD RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT.

Honeywell 17000 Quietcare Hepa Air Cleaner
from Olympia, WA,  May 12, 2008

The hepa filter has made an amazing change in how we feel during allergy season. We use it in our bedroom specifically and wake up feeling less wheezy and stuffed up. It isn't a particularly quiet machine but is suitable for our purpose.

Works well
from Portland, OR,  Apr 14, 2008

I live next door to a smoker and his smoke somehow comes through pipes and gets into my apt. The first day I turned on this air cleaner I didn't smell a difference, but now I definitely do. If I foget to turn it on during the day I do notice a difference. It is not quiet, though. Low speed is ok but not Med. or High. I just turn it off at night. Overall, it is a good product and especially for this price. I would recommend it.

I recently moved to a mobile home. I was having trouble breathing, seemed there was so much in th air in the house. In 2 days of running the air cleaner on high, the air was cleaner. A friend came to visit and we were unpacking boxes. There were old papers, patterns and books to go through. The air, again, got very dirty. My asthma got bad. I turned both air cleaners on high, one at each end of the house, and by morning th air was so much cleaner. My friend even felt the difference. I only have one problem with the Air Cleaners, when set on high, they are not quiet. On low they make a "quiet" noise, that is easy to get used to, but on the other 2 settings are noisy. I think the Honeywell 17000 Quietcare Hepa Air Cleaner is wonderful. I have told family and friends about the Air Cleaners.

Some Mixed Feelings
from Saddle Brook, NJ,  Mar 10, 2008

I think this product is okay. The air appears to be cleaner. It's the first air purifier that I own, so I have none to compare it to. I saved $30 over the lowest price by buying it from Overstock.com. However, I got an older model without a remote, which was fine. My problem is that the switch appears to be faulty. Sometimes I cannot shut the unit off. I can't return it to Overstock.com, so I have to spend about $20.00 in shipping costs to send it to Memphis for repair.
