Dali thought of this painting as all Dali. Focus on the green necktie in the center of the painting and the toreador can easily be seen. Statues resembling the Venus de Milo make up his face which can be seen looking off to the right of the painting. Flies make up his cape and his beret. An image of Dali's wife, Gala, was painted in the top left corner because she frowned upon bullfighting. A bull's head can be seen near the bottom left corner. Underneath the bull's head is a woman in a bikini on top of a pool chair. Dali includes this image to give the viewer something familiar to look at. Dalmatian's have been commonly used to illustrate the Gestalt principle of emergence and can be found in the bottom center of the painting. Dali showed that this work could be divided into twelve equally sized squares (four rows and three columns), each containing what amounts to a painting in its own right.
