I am no stranger to assembling furniture, and I was encouraged by the reviews that said assembly was not bad on this piece. Maybe I just got a dud, but I had a bear of a time. First, the wooden dowels do not hold anything together and the quality control on the unit I received was very poor. Some of the holes for the dowels were way too big and the dowels would not stay in place. Some of the holes were way too tight and I had to use something to bang the dowels in. If you don't want to experience extreme frustration, make sure you have two people available for this project, at least until you get the sides of the unit screwed on. Until the sides are attached, everything is just connected by the (ill-fitting) dowels and falls apart as soon as you stop holding it together. Also, some of the screws I received were defective and not useable. This was not a huge deal. However, NONE of the holes for the screws that hold on the back panels were pre-drilled on my unit and there are between two and three dozen screws back there. I did not have a cordless screwdriver available, and the lack of pre-drilling made the project VERY unpleasant. Overall, I like the look of this piece. Once it's together and it's placed against a wall, it looks much more expensive than the $XXX I paid for it. I would recommend it. However, it definitely exacted its pound of flesh from me, and I would warn anyone that assembly is miserable but worth it.Read More
Slightly difficult to assemble the first few pieces. It's is a beautiful finish and is very solid once fully constructed. I would purchase this again. The only fault I found was with the pieces of wood you attach as backing...not all of the pieces had per drilled holes (easy fix if you have drill bit). Overall good product and looks amazing in my living room!Read More
I'm pleased I bought this piece!!! The color is great and it looks good in the room. The directions were easy to follow, but assembling is not for the "timid" or "impatient" person. Caution: two of the pieces for the lower, center back panels did not have pre-drilled holes as noted - it was an easy fix (for me).Read More
The product looks nice but>>>It initially came without all the parts. Even when we got all the parts the back of the book case does not fit together correctly. So much so that we used duct tape to seal the gaps. The front looks good. If the front did not look so good, I would have returned the book case. I do have to say the Overstock Customer Service poeple tried very hard to get us parts and to make us happy.Read More

Bookshelves Buying Guide
Despite the name, bookshelves are about more than just shelving books. Bookshelves make versatile solutions as free-standing dry food pantries, open dressers or displays dedicated to your knick-knacks and tchochkes. They quickly convert into china cabinets, media organizers or shoe storage. Whatever the case, the right bookcase goes miles toward making your home into the haven it should be.
Whether you want a place to store books or simply display collectibles, bookshelves are the perfect solution. A bookshelf is a versatile type of furniture that goes with any room or decorating style. Aside from using them for books, use the space for storage by placing baskets for magazines, games, or videos in the living room. Place bookshelves in the bathroom to store extra towels and bath items. Take this list of bookshelf essentials into account before you purchase a set of shelves.
Best Bookshelf Materials
It's not unusual for bookshelves to incorporate multiple materials for different features. If you haven't decided on wood, wood products, metal or glass bookshelves, look at their relative strengths and weaknesses. Look below to learn the best bookshelf materials. Wood: "Solid wood" is a common term for furniture made from lumber planks. Beware of making assumptions based on labels like "hardwood" and "softwood." Hardwoods are derived from deciduous trees and softwoods from coniferous trees; the terms don't connote their relative strengths. Balsa is a hardwood even though it is very soft, just as Douglas fir is a softwood even though it is very hard. They all make excellent, classic stock material for bookcases. Generally, harder woods are the heavier and more resistant to scratches. Still, softer woods, if treated correctly, will keep just as well as harder woods. Plywood: Made by stacking thin sheets -- "plies" -- of lumber and gluing them under pressure, plywood features grains that alternate direction for strength. Several grades are available, of differing cost. Top and bottom plies can be high-quality woods to create the appearance of fine woods, but edge veneer or molding is needed to complete the illusion. Particleboard: Wood chips glued together carry a much lower price tag than solid wood, and particleboard is denser and more uniform. It's a great choice when cost is the primary consideration. Bookshelves crafted from veneered composite boards can look and feel as good as real wood. MDF: Wood fibers, tiny chips and sawdust collected and glued into sheets form medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Low-cost MDF makes an excellent base for veneers; plus, its strength is consistent and it shapes well. Metal: There's a reason most library bookshelves are made from metal: Metal bookcases are resistant to moisture and fungus, their low-friction shelves are easier on books' bindings and metal's strength-to-weight ratio can't be beat. Their cost usually comes in below any other material. Glass: Glass bookshelves weigh more than other types, but if you plan on assembling your bookshelves only once, the style points can be well worth it. Tempered glass shelves (in wood or metal uprights, called "standards") give your home an unbeatable contemporary feel, and glass bookcases' smooth, transparent surfaces add brilliant levity to a decorating piece that might otherwise be notably opaque and heavy.
