Three major concerns when we were looking for a futon. We wanted something comfortable, nice looking, and very sturdy. This futon seems to fit the bill well. The mattress is a typical futon mattress, thus when my picky father comes to visit, we may slap a memory foam mattress topper on it to add some cushion. THe wood is very quality, and though it took some time to put it together, the construction is relatively easy and surprisingly well built. There are legitimate bolts with threads and metal reinforcements, as well as supports throughout. The only thing made of plastic are the wheels that allow the futon to fold up and down, but I suspect they'll still hold up well. The drawers DO come with the set, whereas on some futons they are additional/separate purchases. They, however, are just sliding drawers... there is no track or mechanism by which they attach to the actual futon, they just have wheels on bottom and slide in and out on top of carpet. However, when shut, you'd never be able to tell, and the fact that they are separate gives you flexibility in how you use them. Only reason I give 4 instead of 5 is because of the slight ambiguity in instructions for assembly, the smell of the mattress, and that no additional colors were available at the time of purchase.

It took a while to get it put together by myself but, with patience, I did it. I am not a novice at furniture assembly and I had the tools (mallet, pliers, better wrench set than the one sent with the furniture, etc.) ready. And I carefully read the instructions. YOU GOTTA DO THAT! Then, once I got the frame and the slatted piece together, I did have to find a friend to help me with the last part...uniting these. You can't do it alone. I know...I tried. Then came the time to unpack the futon cushion and put it on. Thankfully, it came with the cover already on it. It opened up to full size once the plastic cover was cut off and we put it on the frame with no problem. And it feels wonderful to sit on...just the right amount of firmness. I probably won't be sleeping on it...it's in my exercise room, but in a pinch, it would be comfortable to do so. And the drawers that roll out underneath it are really handy for storing stuff. You could get a set of bedding in there but probably not a comforter or pillows.

Bought these to slid under my futon to hold bedding. The look very nice and was easy to put together. Quality wasn't what I had hoped, but I'm sure with the little use I will give them they should be fine.

Pretty typical of put-it-together-yourself furniture, with some problem areas. Watch the assembly videos at http://www.youtube.com/user/EpicFurnishings, as they are very helpful. The original instructions I received had a significant misprint in them, which was corrected on a second sheet that was packaged on the outside of the box, so watch for that. Epic Furnishings needs to go back and finish the last instruction video, as it cuts off before assembly is complete. Problems: 1) As noted in other reviews, putting in the C-shaped hook that links the back to the seat might be a problem. Watch the manufacturers assembly videos on YouTube to see the best way to do it. If it wont go in, try putting each end of the hook into each metal loop in the back and the seat, to see if one end of the hook is the problem. The hook I received is a little bent on the end with the hole in it, and wont go into either loop. Ive emailed Epic Furnishings asking for a new one and have not heard back from them, despite their claim of 24-hour response time. I think the hook is pretty important to the whole assembly, as it will keep the back and seat from separating in the middle. I may have to fabricate something to take its place if the manufacturer doesnt send me a replacement. 2) The other difficult assembly point is putting on the mattress retainers. The ones I received needed to have the ends bent in toward each other a bit, and that was VERY hard to do. Also, they did not go through the frame far enough to expose enough of the thread ends to hold the washer, lock-washer, and nut (I couldnt get the nut started on the threads). I fixed this by first putting on just the nuts and tightening them until the mattress retainer was pulled down farther into the frame, then taking the nuts off and putting all the hardware on. Be careful doing this, as it seems like you could pull the mattress retainers in too far and damage the frame. After all that, Im now concerned that the mattress retainers will wear holes in my sheets and the mattress cover when the futon is used for a bed, so I might take the retainers off entirely. 3) The flip-top armrest lids need to be put on with tiny screws, which come with the hardware, but there are no instructions anywhere about using the screws or putting the lids on, and this assembly step takes a bit more care than the others, as there are no pilot holes to guide you! 4) The grid that supports the mattress appears to have a weak spot where the edges are folded for shipment, and the grids may separate over time at that point. This is especially important if you are using the futon as a mattress and a couch. The first time I tried to move things into a couch configuration with the mattress on the frame, the hinge point separated a bit and Im afraid it will soon break there. Overall, Im pleased with the looks of the frame. Hope it doesnt fall apart.

I looove this futon! It arrived a day early via UPS in a square box because it folds up into a square ottoman for storage/moving/or even if you just want a nice ottoman that folds out to a bed! It's very stylish and appears well made. The cushions are somewhat firm, which I actually prefer for sleeping. It's like those click-clack futons, where the back segments can either be up, down, half up/down, or even just one side up and one down like a chaise! It was the perfect solution for guests in my home office.

I've been looking for a nice, inexpensive couch for a while. I stumbled upon overstock.com and this was one of the first ones I looked at. The other reviewers are accurate, it does sit very low to the ground. From the floor to cushion, it's only 12 inches. I went to Walmart and bought some furniture risers to bring it up an extra 5 inches, and it works perfectly. Assembly is a breeze. All you have to do is take it out of the box and screw in the four legs. The legs come hidden in a zipped area underneath the couch, which can then be used for storage of something relatively small. The back of the couch clicks to three settings, fully down, slightly reclined, or upright. Clicking it into position is very simple. Many people have said online that they would not put this in their living room. That's where I have it now and it looks great. I do have a small apartment, so it may look differently in a larger house. I'm 5'10 and even though my legs do hang off the side when I lay on the couch, it's still very comfortable and I would have no problems sleeping on it for a night. I've had it in my apartment for two days now and have no complaints. The only issue was how low it was to the ground, but again, that's easily rectified by purchasing $7 risers at Walmart.

All high quality wood construction. I hired someone to assemble it - so can't comment on ease of assembly. I wanted to be sure it was put together well and would last. The wood tone was just what I was looking for and the storage drawers underneath are convenient and complete the look. We placed this In a study that serves as an occasional guest room. Easy to convert to the full size bed and mattress is very comfortable. Soft on top but firm and supportive- feels substantial and not cheap and flimsy. Better than a sleeper sofa mattress for sure. We've had a few guest already and my husband has napped on it in the couch position several times. I didn't love the color of the cover so purchased a full fitted sheet in a pattern I like better and works great. I did find a stick - similar to a paint stirrer- to place in the folding mechanism to "lock" it in place so it wouldn't slide open or move on it's own. Works well. Otherwise easy to operate. Don't have an issue with mattress sliding off - just have to fold it into the groove and put it in place when want to use as a couch. My friends commented "that is not a regular futon." It is more like a nice piece of furniture.

I bought this futon for my 15 year old son and it arrived in less than two days. My 18 year old daughter put it together with no problems. It is great quality for the price and I love the storage in the arms. My son is also very happy with the mattress.
