Diificult to assemble. Once the screws were half in the allen key would strio the heads and they would not turn. Out of frustration I hammered them in and it worked, though one of the shelves was damaged by the hammering.Read More
Pros: 1. Very nice looking 2. Sturdy enough for our alcohol collection and books. 3. Better quality than Ikea (in my opinion). The wood is much heavier than ikea pieces I've built. 4. Free shipping and it was packed so well that even with all the damage UPS did to my package on the way, the product was flawless inside. Cons: 1. The supplied allen key is of very low quality. I used an old allen key I had from an ikea piece and it worked much better for me. 2. Shipped with UPS. This is a problem with Overstock, not the product. The package is 85 pounds and it's huge. I expected to be contacted by a shipping company, not have the UPS guy drop this off at the entrance to my building and that I'll have to carry it upstairs myself. 3. price may not be the best, as just yesterday I saw a similar looking piece (thicker wood, too!) for $150 at a local store in Astoria. But I guess the "free" shipping is calculated in the total price here. Other thoughts: I assembled this with a partner. We had an electric screwdriver (HIGHLY recommended!) and two regular ones. Overall it took us about an hour and a half to build it, and I feel like we're pros at this as we've built many furniture in the past. Overall I'm very happy with this purchase!Read More
This bookcase has a great design and can be placed in a vertical or horizontal position. It is very sturdy due to the design. The glue included helps to make it very stable without problems of tipping or swaying. It was a little tricky to get it together but with patience and following the pictorial instructions, the end result is worth the time! It is a very heavy piece and the grey color goes well with any decor. I'm very satisfied!Read More
I love this bookcase. It is not super high quality and it is not something I imagine passing down to my children but it looks fantastic in my living room and I have had it for two years now. It looks great horizontally or vertically (I have mine lying horizontally).Read More
I read thru all the reviews before purchasing this bookcase....I have to say kudos to overstock for such convenient ordering process. Kudos to UPS for not tossing my packaging in front of my lawn. Kudos to the warehouse people for packing this to withstand the next big storm and kudos to whoever made/design this bookcase because it's fantastic looking. Last but not least, kudos to myself for putting it together! This is a wonderful addition to any room in the family. I bought one black for the livingroom and one dark walnut for the bedroom but I like the walnut so much that I got another one for my guest/home office room. It's a great deal, if you can find else where with the same price and service - let me know coz so far I haven't found any. :)Read More
I bought this bookcase about a year ago. I actually bought two, and stacked one on top of the other (horizontally), against a wall - and it looks great! That is always one thing my guests comment on, and love! As always, the package arrived fast and well packed - nothing broken or missing. The bookcase was very easy to put together, and it looks great!Read More
This bookcase is advertised as Wood, Veneer. In my gullible naivete, I assumed WOOD means lumber, boards, solid wood, and veneer means thin slices of real wood veneer. NOT! The item is made of compressed particle board and the veneer is a cheap thin plastic laminate. Beware! If you are looking for a real wood bookcase this is not what you want.Read More
It's a very nice and classy piece of furniture. Looks expensive and is solid. Took a little bit of elbow grease for me to do it by myself, but not bad. Overall, worth the money.Read More
We got these bookcases after reading a lot of other reviews on this website. We got them in a 3 days, the boxes were completely covered in bubble wrap and though the boxes were a little crushed the wood inside was completely fine. It took about an hour and half to put them together, the instructions were fairly clear. I just finished putting a ton of IKEA stuff together so it was relatively simple in comparision. I got the "walnut" though it is very dark more mahagony than walnut. The picture on the site, was fairly accurate. So it was what I expected and they look great. We already got some great compliments on them. They are very sturdy, and once filled with books don't move at all. They come with stickers to cover the screws which were the wrong color and looked horrible. However, I took someone else's advise from another review and got dark nail polish the same color as the wood and covered every screw and they completely disappeared and you don't notice them at all. I am very happy with these bookcases, for the price you can't beat their unique look and good construction.Read More
Questions & Answers
Thank you for your inquiry whollyc, yes this item is finished on the back and should make a great room divider.
yes, finish is the same on both sides. In fact I probably have put one together "backwards". I can't tell ....
What are the widths of the opemings on the bottom when horizontal
Thank you for your question "jasperblue". When placed horizontal, the smaller sections are 13 inches and the larger are 20 inches. We hope this helps with your decision.
24 + inches
What is the weight capacity of the shelves and could this be used as a TV stand horizontally?
No idea about the weight capacity but we have about 8 full alcohol bottles on one shelf and it doesn't seem like it's too much. The unit feels very sturdy and I wouldn't hesitate to use it as a TV stand. But that's just my opinion - please also seek actual numbers before you make your decision!
Hello "jasperblue", The weight capacity of the shelves horizontally is about 20 lbs and vertically it is approximately 25 lbs and this can be used as a TV stand horizontally for flat screens and LED screens, not for plasmas or CRT. Thank you for your question.
+/- 10 lbs. ( I have books on it) and no can not be used as a tv stand
Bookshelves Buying Guide
Despite the name, bookshelves are about more than just shelving books. Bookshelves make versatile solutions as free-standing dry food pantries, open dressers or displays dedicated to your knick-knacks and tchochkes. They quickly convert into china cabinets, media organizers or shoe storage. Whatever the case, the right bookcase goes miles toward making your home into the haven it should be.
Best Bookshelf Materials
It's not unusual for bookshelves to incorporate multiple materials for different features. If you haven't decided on wood, wood products, metal or glass bookshelves, look at their relative strengths and weaknesses. Look below to learn the best bookshelf materials. Wood: "Solid wood" is a common term for furniture made from lumber planks. Beware of making assumptions based on labels like "hardwood" and "softwood." Hardwoods are derived from deciduous trees and softwoods from coniferous trees; the terms don't connote their relative strengths. Balsa is a hardwood even though it is very soft, just as Douglas fir is a softwood even though it is very hard. They all make excellent, classic stock material for bookcases. Generally, harder woods are the heavier and more resistant to scratches. Still, softer woods, if treated correctly, will keep just as well as harder woods. Plywood: Made by stacking thin sheets -- "plies" -- of lumber and gluing them under pressure, plywood features grains that alternate direction for strength. Several grades are available, of differing cost. Top and bottom plies can be high-quality woods to create the appearance of fine woods, but edge veneer or molding is needed to complete the illusion. Particleboard: Wood chips glued together carry a much lower price tag than solid wood, and particleboard is denser and more uniform. It's a great choice when cost is the primary consideration. Bookshelves crafted from veneered composite boards can look and feel as good as real wood. MDF: Wood fibers, tiny chips and sawdust collected and glued into sheets form medium-density fiberboard (MDF). Low-cost MDF makes an excellent base for veneers; plus, its strength is consistent and it shapes well. Metal: There's a reason most library bookshelves are made from metal: Metal bookcases are resistant to moisture and fungus, their low-friction shelves are easier on books' bindings and metal's strength-to-weight ratio can't be beat. Their cost usually comes in below any other material. Glass: Glass bookshelves weigh more than other types, but if you plan on assembling your bookshelves only once, the style points can be well worth it. Tempered glass shelves (in wood or metal uprights, called "standards") give your home an unbeatable contemporary feel, and glass bookcases' smooth, transparent surfaces add brilliant levity to a decorating piece that might otherwise be notably opaque and heavy.
