You can hear it, but I find it to be quieter than other window units I have had in this price range. The compressor doesn't "kick" as hard when it turns on, and it runs quietly, especially on lower fan settings. Keeps my small bedroom plenty cold on very hot days. Installs easily, clear instruction.
