At first glance, this item is of excellent construction - I'm sure that, once installed, it could take a severe beating and still provide excellent security. It's more than adequate for outdoor home use. The problems are with the mechanism of operation and with installation and configuration (primarily the fault of the installation instructions). The instructions are extremely confusing. The first thing to do is disassemble the interior piece to add batteries. I'm an engineer, and it took me 90 minutes to figure out how to do this. Why? Because the picture on the instruction sheet does not match the item! The inside latch isn't a latch like the pictures show - it's another "doorknob"-type thing, the same as on the outside. The instructions keep talking about a "ring" to unscrew using the (included) spanner wrench. What ring? You'll only discover that when you remove the "keyhole cover" that, instead of a keyhole, covers a screw that must be removed. The sheet doesn't say anything about this, and is clearly talking about an older model. So now you've figured out the hard part. The rest should be easy. Just plug the outside battery cable to the inside (BEFORE installing it in the door - you want to test it first, right?) and change the master code. Simple, according to the instruction sheet. Hit a couple keys, enter the current code, enter the new code, and hit another key. BEEP-BEEP-BEEP. What? The instructions say that that means that "the code wasn't accepted". Why not? I followed the instructions precisely. Try it a few more times, still doesn't work. Okay, maybe the master code isn't what the sheet says it should be. No problem. Just hold down the reset button on the back (and aren't you glad now that you didn't install it yet, since you can't get to the reset button once it's installed in the door?) while opening the front fingerprint cover to reset it to the default. BEEP. Fine. Now, try the new master code to see if it'll activate the latch mechanism, to be sure it works. BEEP. Great, that's the right code! Now, back to the code reset procedure. BEEP BEEP BEEP. I give up. I absolutely could not get this to work. I tried 20 times, following the instructions precisely. And given that the default master code is the same for all units like this, you absolutely MUST change it before installation for security. Finally, the kicker. Assuming you figure out the above (which, again, I didn't, but I was so excited to see this thing working that I wanted to get it installed), you put it all together. Register a fingerprint - no problem. Read the fingerprint - no problem (I tested it about 50 times and it worked 100% - no complaints here). Door latch doesn't work. No matter what I tried, it just wouldn't work. I pulled the cover off the back of the outside piece to see the mechanism, and it's actually quite clever. See, when you supply a proper fingerprint, there's a large cylindrical electromagnet inside that gets turned on, which forces a little steel cog-wheel (think of a crenellated castle turret) up to engage the turning mechanism. When the electromagnet is turned off, the cog is forced back into the disengaged position by a spring so it won't turn the latch. Very clever, but it didn't work at least half of the time when disassembled, and it NEVER worked when fully assembled - it always stayed disengaged. Finally, the key override also didn't work. That is, it wouldn't push in the crenellated cog to engage the latch mechanism. It seems that underneath the cog there's another piece that's spring loaded - it only engages when a proper key is inserted. The only problem is, it doesn't work. It doesn't push in this piece at all. So, in summary: master code reset doesn't work, key override doesn't work, fingerprint latch mechanism doesn't work. In other words, this item is a paperweight. Maybe I just got a defective unit. Maybe it wasn't QA tested properly (despite the 5 "QA tested 105 OK" stickers on the back and insides). Thankfully I'm tolerant of problems like this, and am waiting for my replacement unit to give them another chance - I really do enjoy high-tech toys like this that serve a useful purpose in a clever manner. But I would NEVER curse this item on any friends that I would want to keep who aren't of like mind. So: if you don't mind fooling around, deciphering ridiculously bad instructions, and possibly having to exchange for another item, buy this item! Otherwise, save your money and time and use a regular deadbolt and key. This thing is NOT ready for regular-consumer prime time.

This product works fairly well. Scan both index fingers in order to get more effective read rate on the scanner. The instructions are pretty bad I would say.... so if you not handy, you will have a tough time modifying this item if needed. I installed this item on a fire door and had to cut a portion of the internal prongs on the door handle where it attached to the handle on the other side of the door. The handle prongs are also welded (soldered) on and are a little flimsy (build quality could be better on the inner components of the handle). Note also that in order to get the main fingerprint lock apart, their is a screw behind the lock cap. Do yourself a favor and make sure that the hole in the door is reasonably close to the template (provided with instructions) before you open the plastic wrap. Its ok if its further away by a 1/2 inch or so because the actual latch mechanism can be extended by twisting counterclockwise. I think this is why they put the instructions outside the plastic and a big warning that if you break the plastic seal, you own it! The dead-bolt latch looks less like a door knob (see Ovestock picture) and more like a notched billet of aluminum. Feels pretty nice as does it look. It looks very modern, contemporary with all hidden screws etc. Overall product works fairly well and reasonable good pricing from overstock. These notes may seem unclear now, but I assure you, they will come clear when you install this. Also, READ THE INSTRUCTIONS!! Even if you are one of these people who just complete stuff without them, it will serve you well to take an inventory of parts (to see that they provide a tool and a part for everything including a file, screwdriver, etc) and read over the installation instructions. Also, read and understand programming instructions before freezing you tail of figuring it out at the door with the door opening and closing to test. ***IMPORTANT*** make sure to change the master code because this is exactly the same for all units; but be CAUTIOUS when you do this because if you forget it, you have to take the lock back off to reset it on the inside... not fun if you have just killed yourself putting it on in the first place.

Setup is tricky, and the key with this lock is when programming your thumb/finger, really get it into a groove on the scanner that you can repeat - it has to be in the same position on the scanner each time to be recognized (although it's really not that picky). I have had this for about 4 months now and I've probably only had 5-6 denials. No battery changes yet. I would only recommend this lock for indoors, because water (even a damp finger) seems to disrupt the recognition system. Oh, and if you are having trouble keeping the lock from wiggling during operation, use crush washers on the bolts that run through it. I've gotten a ton of compliments on the lock, if you're looking for a little "wow" factor when someone enters your residence, it will definitely give you that.

Instructions nearly impossible. Had to drill and bigger hole in my door. Then discovered that the lock doesn't work. Emailed back and forth for 2 weeks with the itouchless people before they conceded that it truly does not work, and will allow me to return it even though the plastic wrap was opened. In the interim I had to go and buy another lock so that I don't have a gaping hole in my door.

This unit has two tiny screws at the back of the interior side that are very difficult to remove and replace and access the battery compartment. The unit doesn't recognize fingerprints very well. Their instructions were followed and its a hit or miss proposition. Mostly miss in not recognizing finger prints. My experirence may not be typical,but it is accurate in my case.

Difficult to install. Does not fit well. Will not read ANY of my fingerprints. Entering the number code works well. If anything it may deter break-ins (or they'll just kick the door in!). It was not comforting to read that you could NOT return/exchange once you opened the box. Yet the only way to get the template and instructions to see if it would even fit on our door was INSIDE the box! Wonder how many people just gave up and threw the thing away. We were determined to make it work. If you can spare a day of agony and frustration and get it installed and reading prints, you'll be fine. The fact that no one can get "locked out" of the house because they forgot keys or lost them, is worth it in the end.

This is a great product, but it is a bit "fussy" and "sensitive" and will simply not read some people's fingerprints. Also, i frequently have to try 2-3 times before it accepts mine. none the less, I love being keyless!

Very pleased with this product at this time. Would like matching inside door locks.
