Disappointed
from Houston, TX,  May 30, 2011

This unit is supposed to cool up to a 500 square foot area. We purchased it to cool a small 250 square foot office that we built in our backyard. The office is well built and well insulated. It has three small windows in which we have installed blinds in. We have had the unit set up for about a week now and it runs constantly. The only time it reaches 79 is at night. It stays on 80-83 all day which is NOT sufficient for the computer equipment we need to run our business. We even have a ceiling fan and another floor fan running constantly also to help it circulate the air and it just simply is not sufficient. I am dreading seeing our next light bill. We definitely expected more out of this unit since our office is only 250 square feet. I would NOT recommend this unit to anyone in the south, because it simply cannot keep up with the heat. It is not even officially summer here. It is only May!

Completely defective
from New Orleans,  Dec 11, 2010

Are you serious? How can you have a product that hardly cools, constantly leaks and shorts the breaker every other time the compressor activates? This is hazard waiting to happen. What a joke.

  • Please tell us about the quality of the product. takes forever to cool and room is not that big
  • How accurate was the on site description of the product? accurate enough

bad heater
from Houston, TX,  Oct 13, 2010

The a/c mode is excellent. However, the heateing mode is terrible. First off the unit is not a heater, but a heat pump. the temperature range max out at 77. The sensor is located next to the condensor coil so in a matter of 2-3 minutes the thermoter goes from 63 to 77 without a noticeable change in room temp. I contacted the manufacture. Their response was to place the unit 4 feet from all walls and if did not help, pull out the sensor from the back of the unit.

good product
 Sep 7, 2010

We did considerable research before selecting this item, and have been very pleased with its performance. It does a wonderful job cooling the area and it was very easy to install. We have not yet seen a power bill to see how much energy it is using, but I would have no qualms about recommending this item to anyone interested in such a product.

Cooler!
from lk durham nc,  Jul 14, 2010

I put the a/c-heater in our enclosed porch, it works great but would like a thermostat fan too. When the a/c compressor is not needed the fan continues to run. Otherwise it cools great.

Overstock Service
 from Angleton,TX,  Jul 3, 2010

I bought EdgeStar 12,000 BTU as a back-up during power outages since we live on Gulf Coast. and we have a generator. I have not plugged unit in yet but it appears to be top quality. As for Overstock, their service and pricing was excellent. Received unit in 4 business days.

Can't Beat
from Kings Mountain, NC,  Sep 13, 2009

For the money you can't argue. It works great, it's better built than some of the other more known brands. Be advised though.....I am not sure it can cool and heat as large of a room as the claims are made. No big deal for most and myself. The only other thing I wish for EdgeStar would be a better warranty. 90 Days on Labor when there is a 1 year on parts? However, for the money I was glad to go with their warranty. Thanks Overstock for selling this unit at such a great value!

One Thing
from Orlando, FL,  Sep 9, 2009

This Unit does a really good job except for one small thing. The vent is adjustable left to right but not up and down. Heat rises, and it would be nice if you could point the cold air up into the hotter air in the room. Other than that one thing, this unit is compact and good looking. The price was over $100.00 less than a similar unit in the big discount stores. I highly recommend this unit to anyone who wants to cool or heat a medium sized room.

Good value HVAC
 from CA - SF,  Sep 6, 2009

This portable HVAC is a good value, although if you only need AC (not heat) then the AP12005ECO should pay back the initial price difference in lower electric bills. It works well but is somewhat noisy: 60-80dB depending on settings, which puts it in the middle compared to other portables in my experience. What impressed me most was Overstock.com's surprisingly fast shipping and best overall price; the machine arrived well packed and worked right out of the box.Note that all air conditioners must vent out somehow. This machine is a single-hose portable, with the air intake and vent hose on the back, and the output on the front. It helps to place the machine in such a way that it can draw air from outside the room, and vent out too. (Dual-hose portables make that easier.) Otherwise, it will draw heated or cooled air from the room, and vent it out, which creates negative air pressure. That draws unheated or uncooled air into the room, reducing the efficiency of the process. All single-hose machines have that difficulty, but the Edgestar machines are less difficult to position than some others that put both the intake and output on the front.

Great bargain & product
 from California,  Aug 14, 2009

I looked all over the internet for a portable air conditioner. I found this one somewhere else for a much higher price and the reviews were mostly not very good. I don't think those pp knew what they were talking about. My new A/C works GREAT in my very large studio apartment in California. keeps me nice & cool, its not near as noisey as my swamp cooler or fan. AND, in the winter I can use it as a heater. I LOVE IT!!!!! Highly Recommend!!!

Basic portable
from New York, NY,  Aug 12, 2009

It has just very basic operations. But for the price, can't complain. I like the fact that you don't have to empty any trays (unlike some of the older models).

Failure to cool
 from Alabama,  Aug 31, 2010

I'm very skeptical that this is a 12000 btu air conditioner. If it cannot cool a well insulated, dimly light small server room below 76 degreees, I don't think it even works right. I was also very fortunate to be working on the servers when I noticed a puddle of water around the unit. If it was overnight, who knows what damage it would have done. Really aggravating product. Fail.

decent
from Eastern CT,  Sep 8, 2009

Makes the inside atmosphere more comfortable, i.e. decreases the humidity and temperature but is unable to cool below 75-76F. Also when considering, take in mind that it occupies significantly more space (~x3) than its footprint due to stiffness of the exhausting hose.
