What to Pack for Africa's Highest Peak
Imagine that you are planning a trip that will take you from the equator to Antarctica in seven days. Now imagine that you have to limit the amount of gear you pack to 35 pounds or less. The task is getting more complicated. What kind of luggage would you choose and how would you pack for a trip that encompasses such extreme changes in climate and altitude? When Erica Davis, a paraplegic athlete, and Tara Butcher, a physically challenged athlete, climb Africa's highest peak, they will have to answer exactly those questions. The challenge: Mount Kilimanjaro rises from nearly sea level all the way up to 19,330 feet. The trail climbs from the hot bushland through rain forest, moorland, alpine desert and arctic glaciers up to the rocky Uhuru peak. A climb like Mt. Kili presents special challenges when it comes to luggage, clothing and gear. Being prepared for the weather and temperature extremes is a necessity, but it's also important not to pack too much. There is a 35-pound weight limit to each piece of luggage carried by a porter. Most climbers pack one 35-pound capacity bag to go up with a porter and one small daypack to carry up themselves. The daypack: Erica and Tara will have 7 days to summit Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro. As they pass from one ecological zone to the next, their needs will change and so will the contents of their daypacks. Each day Erica and Tara will repack their daypacks in anticipation of the specific challenges of the day's journey. In general, their daypacks will include things like water, snacks, dry clothing, waterproof gear and sunscreen. The importance of keeping clothing and gear dry cannot be overstated. When choosing a daypack, a small to medium backpack made of lightweight, moisture-resistant material that comes with a removable waterproof shell will be ideal. It's also helpful if the backpack has convenient access to a water bottle compartment or can accommodate a water bladder. Plenty of pockets, zipper compartments and hooks are also handy. What to pack: A sturdy but lightweight water-repellant duffel bag with a capacity of about 35 pounds is ideal for the trek to the top of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The bag needs to have room for plenty of layers of breathable, moisture-wicking clothing and layers of fleece clothing, as well as a waterproof layer. To save space, it's a good idea to pack clothing that does double duty, such as pants that easily convert into shorts. Aside from clothing, the climb will also require accessories like sunglasses, hats and gloves, plus equipment like trekking poles and a headlamp, as well as toiletries like sunscreen, insect repellent and a first-aid kit. Support the Challenged Athletes Foundation: Overstock.com and the C.H.E.K Institute are co-sponsoring Erica and Tara's climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise awareness for athletes with physical challenges who wish to participate and compete in sports. Portions of the proceeds will benefit the Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF). CAF raises funds to give physically challenged athletes the opportunity to stay active and competitive in the sports they love. To show your support for physically challenged athletes like Erica and Tara, donate now to the Challenged Athletes Foundation for the Fit 4 Kili Climb. Best Sunroom Furnishing Ideas
Sunrooms are often some of the most popular areas of any home. Large windows and garden views make sunrooms feel like outdoor retreats while still providing the cover and warmth of indoor rooms. Because sunrooms are connected more to the outdoors than any other room in your home, pick design elements and furniture that work with that theme. Below, you'll find some of the best sunroom furnishing ideas. Seating: One of the most important parts of a sunroom is the seating arrangement. Since you'll likely want to spend many warm nights and bright days in your sunroom, you'll need adequate seating. Sunrooms typically feature either wood furniture or wrought iron seating. When deciding what's right for you, consider the overall look of the room as well as the intended comfort level. Wooden furniture with thick cushions is warmer and more comfortable than metal. A wicker sectional sofa with comfortable cushions will work well with the design of a sunroom. Alternatively, wrought iron benches and chairs give a modern look and feel to a room. Mismatched plush armchairs are a great way to bring both comfort and casual elegance to a sunroom. Tables: When picking out tables for your sunroom, consider how you're going to use the area. Choose a low table that can act as a coffee table for guests to set down their drinks. Tables with glass inserts match sunrooms well because of surrounding glass windows. Sunrooms are a popular place to go during parties and family get-togethers, so consider adding a small dining table and chairs to the room for meals. Design elements: Although sunrooms are indoors, they tie in the nature and wonder of the outdoors. Choose design elements that bring both sun and nature into the room. Wicker planters can hold plants of your choice. Place planters on side tables and on the floor next to entrances to give an inviting impression as guests enter the room. Artwork can change a bland sunroom into something charming and interesting. Look for paintings and sculptures that incorporate colors and themes from the surrounding decor. Benefits of Using a Travel Backpack When Traveling
Travel backpacks offer a number of benefits for all types of travelers and may be an attractive alternative to larger tote bags, duffel bags and miniature suitcases. Whether you're traveling with a backpack over a long distance or traveling by plane with a small backpack as a carry-on, use a travel backpack designed with extra compartments and tight-fitting, portable style to ensure a comfortable travel experience. Easy to stow and store: The design of a travel backpack makes it easy to store it in overhead bins in a bus, train or airplane. The soft sides of a backpack let it conform to tight storage spaces. Many travel backpacks have compression straps that let you cinch the packs contents down to take up less space. Comfort: Travel backpacks put less strain on your body than most other kinds of luggage because their weight doesn't pull on one side of your body. Travel backpacks are designed to evenly distribute their load on your shoulders and hips, making them easy to carry for several hours. Thick straps with lots of padding make it even more comfortable. Keeps travelers organized: Many travel backpacks are designed with several compartments to store smaller items, such as water bottles, a cell phone, MP3 player, PDA, passport and subway tokens. This makes it easier to stay organized while traveling, ensuring that all your basic items and accessories are within easy reach. Easy to move around: Probably the biggest benefit of using a travel backpack is the ease of movement it provides. You don't have to worry about dragging a rolling suitcase up a flight of stairs. A travel backpack is also easier to maneuver through a crowd of people than most other types of luggage. Protects items from the elements: Many travel backpacks are made with water-resistant and waterproof fabrics that protect your valuables no matter what the weather forecast may look like. Travel backpacks made with polywick fabric, ballistic nylon and other weatherproofing materials are especially beneficial for travelers who will be outdoors for most of their trip. Best Ideas for a Cowboy Birthday Party
Plan the perfect cowboy birthday party for your little cowhands and their posse with a Western-themed party. With the right decorations, games and food, you can create a hoedown that your child and his or her friends will remember for years to come. Find cowboy party supplies and crafts for a colossal cowboy party, and don't forget to capture every moment with your camera. Invitations. Create cowboy party invitations that look like "wanted" posters using recycled brown cardstock paper. Print a black-and-white picture of the cowboy or cowgirl of honor in the center and use an old-style font or block lettering. Include the time and place for the round-up on the cowboy party invitations. Use fun phrases such as "howdy partner" and "saddle up for the showdown" for added laughs. Ask guests to come in their favorite cowboy attire, including rugged jeans, flannels and boots. Decorations. For cowboy party decorations, cover tables with red and white tablecloths. Display "wanted" posters of the birthday cowboy or cowgirl throughout the cowboy party room. Add balloons in colors of red, white and blue. Shape strands of rope into lassos and place them on the tables or hang them on chairs. Use bandanas or a Western-themed fabric for place mats. Create large cutouts of cacti, horses and cowboys for decorations. Bales of hay, stalks of corn and other items can add to the cowboy party decorations. Place bottles of water or juice boxes in a wheelbarrow filled with ice for refreshments. Dress up. Costumes and clothing can add to the cowboy birthday party theme. Because all guests may not know each other, give each guest a name tag cut to look like a sheriff's badge. Use silver cardstock cut into star shapes and attach the name tags with safety pins or tape. Provide guests with bandanas in a variety of colors. Give each guest a straw cowboy hat and a water pistol for an authentic cowboy look. Games. Though cowboys can be serious, there is nothing like having several fun games planned for even the roughest, toughest cowboy to enjoy. If you're holding a summer party, tell all cowboys and cowgirls to bring their swimsuit for a shoot-out using water pistols. Have a galloping contest; use brooms as pretend ponies and have races to see whose horse is the fastest. Old-fashioned potato-sack jumping contests are easy to assemble. Hold a boot toss contest: Have children toss bean bags, gold coins or other cowboy party supplies into an old pair of worn cowboy boots. Food. Create an old-fashioned homemade spread, complete with a cowboy party cake. Barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs or sloppy joes are always a favorite for little cowboys and cowgirls. Salsa and chips, beef jerky and even pulled pork sandwiches are additional ideas. Corn on the cob and cornbread are traditional cowboy staples. Create a cowboy party cake in the shape of a hat, pony or boot to continue the theme. Goodie bags. Thank each guest for coming by giving them a galvanized pail filled with cowboy party favors. Fill each pail with a small amount of straw or hay. Add trail mix, gold coins and licorice rope to each pail. Tie pieces of raffia or fabric for additional decoration to the pail's handle. For other cowboy party favors, consider purchasing small plastic harmonicas, sheriff badges and cowboy figurines. View All Crafts Back to Guides Directory View All Crafts
