  The box arrived in shreds with the styrofoam packing pulverized, and many of the pieces were damaged beyond repair. The desk is made of fiberboard, and some of the components were smashed, especially in the corners. Overstock sent out a replacement with very little hassle. Exactly a week later, I arrived home to find a trail of styrofoam from the street to my doorstep. A large part of the box was in the street, and the package had been laid diagonally from the sidewalk going up the steps to my front porch. I think the packing materials are the poorest quality I've ever seen. I managed to get one set of mostly undamaged pieces from the two boxes. The instructions aren't great, but if you study the pictures closely at each step you can get by. The desk seems fairly sturdy once it's put together, but the finish is fairly low grade, so it won't look good for long. Meanwhile, I have to dispose of the junk desk myself but I can't put it in the regular garbage because it's too big.

  I read the reviews before ordering, and had a 50-50 chance of being happy or disappointed... Although I have only had this desk for a few hours, I am very happy with it... Only took about an hour to put together (I had a few distractions)... Seems very sturdy and strong... The complaints about the imperfections of the surface of the wood are somewhat misleading... The desk is marketed as "Distressed" or "Reclaimed" and that is exactly how they are made... The "Imperfections" are intentional... If you are expecting a smooth surface with a high gloss finish, move on, as this isn't what you are looking for... However, it is exactly what I was looking for... Very happy...

  Based on the price, I was honestly expecting this to look cheap - but I was pleasantly suprised when I opened the delivery today! The desk looks great and has a good feel to it. As others have said, it's not a high-shine, lacquered look, but it still does have a hard finish. I would call it a satin vs high-gloss. It's too early to say what the finish quality is (whether it will scratch, etc) but it looks really good. I plan to purchase a glass top for it and that should help with any surface scratching that could occur.

  I am satisfied with the desk. I wanted a larger desk but was afraid a larger one would overwhelm the den. The color is rich, and it is sturdy. I am not much for putting things together, but setup was relatively easy; all I had to do was attach the legs and hardware. No complaints.
