The place where you sit down to work, pay bills, or just catch up with social media should be comfortable, and it doesn't hurt if it's beautiful, too. Mainly, your desk needs to be a place where you can focus on the task at hand, whatever that may be. Here's what to look for while you shop.
First, you'll need to ask yourself how large of a desk you need. If you just need a place to set your laptop while you write a few emails and check your bank balance, then a small writing desk or secretary will be enough. If you have a desktop computer with a printer, speakers, and other components, you'll need something larger. If you like to have your reference materials nearby, choose something with shelves, drawers, or a hutch.
Next, the room where you'll set up your home office will need to factor into your decision. Large workstations are great for dividing up larger rooms while corner desks are ideal for focusing your thoughts in a cozy room. If the room will be your dedicated home office, then choose something with a bold style and decorate around it. If you're adding a home office area to another room, coordinate the finish and the details with the existing furniture there. A desk with doors may be helpful in a room like this, too, so you can close everything up when you're not working.
Finally, you'll need to think about who will use the desk most. If your inner entrepreneur is telling you to be your own boss, then it could be time to start shopping for home office furniture. Choose a desk that inspires you, whether it's the style that gets your creativity going or just the space to spread out your things. If you're setting up a study space for your child, look for a student desk that has room for a computer as well as an open textbook. If you do a lot of typing, you may want to look for something that comes with a keyboard tray.

This desk is just the right size for my little dining room office. The top of the desk is large enough to handle my tablet with a keyboard, a basket for bills, a container with office supplies, and a bankers lamp. The drawer holds paper work, and office necessities. The best thing is that the mission styling looks so good with my other furniture.

It's all particle board and some MDF, finish is lighter than picture suggests. Design is not well thought out, quality of the parts is so-so. All hardware comes in a single bag for you to sort. Pieces are not labeled at all, you need to figure out which is which going by the images in the assembly instructions. Instructions are not very good, sequence is strange, making it more difficult to assemble than it needs to be. Worst part is the fasteners. I've never seen this type of dowel pins used this way. Essentially the front decorative boards are attached to the desk via plastic compressible dowel pins and nothing more. Needless to say, it is neither secure nor sturdy attachment. Pull on it, and it disengages. Moreover, gentle hammering the board into place damaged the top piece since it is pretty thin MDF. The top piece is held in place via similar type of fastener, but apparently that one has a locking feature. Still, I would not try to lift the desk by the top or front pieces. Keyboa...
