Deadbolts

Doors are the first detail your visitors will see when they visit your home. If you don't care for uninvited visitors, choose an entry door that isn't very inviting--one with a deadbolt. Door security is an ever more important issue, especially for the front door and back door, where someone will most likely try to get in.

Deadbolts have a bigger, longer throw than regular doorknobs. If you are planning any home improvement, a steel or wood door with a deadbolt should be part of the plan. Mount deadbolt locks on every entry door--front, back, side or between the house and the garage. Not only will you sleep or vacation with less concern, you may save money on homeowner's insurance. Choices vary depending on your specific needs: flush or surface mount deadbolt, single or vdouble cylinder deadbolt, and so on. Deadbolt installation can also be a do-it-yourself project, saving you even more cash.

In addition to deadbolt locks, a home keyless entry means there is no key to be lost or stolen. Keyless door locks use a touch pad or fingerprint recognition, and some are integrated right into the door knob (to be unobtrusive). Peepholes may seem a little film noir, but it's always better to open the door after you know who is on the other side. Whatever you choose, an intruder is looking for a quick and quiet entry and escape. Dead bolts on all exterior doors are an easy home improvement project and the best home defense short of owning a pet tiger.
