Island is made of solid wood- the inner shelf is NOT adjustable, but I like where it sits, higher towards the drawer, not right in the middle, so it allows for taller items. The drawer glides on a dowel, not on drawer runners, so putting it together was really easy, i just hope it lasts for years! The leaf extension is really sturdy, I plan on leaving it open always.
