This chair is exactly what I was looking for to pull up to my secretary-style desk in my bedroom when I work on my laptop. It's a good height to sit comfortably at the desk and the cross-back styling makes it look nice as an occasional chair when not at the desk. It came fully assembled and seems very solid & sturdy. It looks just like what I expected from the photos and reviews online. I think one of the other reviews said it was a bit distressed looking (which would have been fine for me), but I don't think it really looks distressed - no scuff marks or worm holes. It is more on the casual side, however - don't know how it would be in a formal dining room, but it's perfect for what I need!
Alot of descriptions of X-back-type chairs use the word "modern," and I suppose depending on the finish, some might be. To me these had a european country feel. I took a chance and bought them to replace the old white/pine nothing-special windsor chairs that came as part of a set with my white base/pine top table. They work perfectly w/the table--I'm not into matchy-matchy decorating--and the rest of my kinda simple, Shaker-ish dining room furniture. Could be the lighting in the photo, but the color is actually slightly lighter in real life, a warm, medium-brown stain. They are heavily distressed--holes, dings, you name it--which I love, but if you don't like that look, these are not for you. They arrive fully assembled, which is a joy--just open the box, pull them out, remove the packing material and voila! The top of one of them was damaged, looks like the dowel attaching the X to the top bar had broken. Didn't look like it happened in shipping, as the box was unmarked when it arrived. This is why I give the workmanship only 4 stars. Looks fairly easy to fix w/some wood glue, a clamp, and a few hours to let it set. Otherwise, these are sturdy, well-made, attractive chairs, and the price is hard to beat.
