I am pretty good at putting together furniture - having assembled several over the years. I have to say this one was challenging. On several occassions I wasn't sure how to line up something like the door fasteners, but when I read ahead in the directions, it became clear. It took me close to 5 hours with a screw drill to help things along. With that said, I've never assembled a piece of furniture that was such good quality. The wood is strong and thick, the hardware is very nice, and I loved the screws and parts in individual bags. Now that it's put together I love it and have no doubt it will be around for many, many years.
This computer cabinet is a tremendous bargain! I've bought plenty of furniture requiring assembly from PB, C&B and yes, even the good old Scandinavian standby (I'm not certain if we're allowed to mention names) and this cabinet/desk is MUCH better quality than any of the above.Yes, it will take quite a long time to assemble. It took me about 5 hrs working alone. To be fair, I did take my time and took several breaks - not to mention I was watching TV at the same time =) BUT the assembly is not difficult. Every piece it lettered, and the hardware is numbered. They even pack each type of hardware in it's own numbered bag so you do not have to dig through a pile of screws looking for the right size. They also pack extra hardware so if you drop a screw you do not have to go crawling around your floor looking for it.Although the assembly time is long I do not see this as a problem. I'd rather take more time to assemble a good sturdy, well designed piece than have a flimsy piece of junk. The quality is amazing for this price, and even for a much higher price. If I get any liquid on my C&B furniture (which costs much more than this!) and let it set there for more than 10 seconds the veneer starts peeling off. This cabinet does not have the same problem.I also did not have the problem that some reviewers had with the gap in the doors. I did notice when attaching the hinges to the doors themselve that if I kept the hinge closed while attaching it to the door, the doors did not line up well. This is hard to explain and will make sense when you have the hinges in hand. Just remember - keep the hinges open (flat) when screwing them onto the doors. The color of the desk is a very nice walnut and not the super dark espresso brown I was thinking it would be. I HIGHLY recommend this item. You will not be dissapointed.
Finding a computer cabinet this size was challenging. Of the few I found at other retailers, this piece was half the price and comprable in quality. Directions were confusing which made assembly a significant investment of time, however, there are shelves and a drawer so this is not a simple project to begin with. Unlike other reviewers, i did not have issues with pilot holes or the front doors lining up. The keyboard tray is a bit short and barely fits my 15" laptop---I'd estimate the keyboard tray gives you 12" of depth. If you choose to have a monitor on the top, it's at perfect height with the keyboard tray and a standard chair. The end product is sturdy and of good quality--I feel I got an excellent value.
I searched for months for a compact laptop cabinet to go in my living room, I finally settled on this one based on appearance and reviews. Like all of the other reviewers, the doors on my piece are not even and have a gap. We had difficulty in getting the left knob to screw on fully... it remains loose, but it's not a big deal since I had planned on replacing the knobs anyway. The sliding laptop tray is a tad short by design, we are *just* able to open our smaller 14" MacBook... but not our (older) larger one. Oh well. After the sheer number of man hours involved (and inadequate directions), I won't even entertain the idea of taking it apart and repackaging it. So, if you like the way it looks, go ahead and order it... you won't be disappointed. Just keep in mind the time needed to assemble and the uneven doors with a gap.
It looks great. It is nice wood and very sturdy. There is a little gap where the two doors meet in the middle that bothers me a bit, but overall it is great. It is nice to have our home office tucked away in a cabinet that looks great in the bedroom.
