The Long and Short of it...First - I'm a Girl! (A Girl with average strength and DIY skills, but a Girl just the same) I wanted to upgrade the closets in my 1950's house in Ft Lauderdale and after checking into some of the closet contractor pricing, felt that I could get similar results at a third of the price if I did the job myself. I bought two Deluxe Red Mahogany kits, one for a 10ft wide reach in closet and one for my smaller 6 x 4 walk-in. I saw them at one of the Hardware Superstores and the same kit was $$ more so I saved $$$ at Overstock and enjoyed shipping! The kits arrived in large cartons well packed and protected and unlike many of these systems where midway through the project, you find they have forgotten to include something that invariably takes weeks to arrive, the inventory matched the packing list. I started on the 10ft closet first and though it did take me two days, the resulting build in is spectacular and even my handyman was impressed with the quality of the kit not to mention that I was able to do it myself. : ) The most important part of the install is the measuring (oh, and beer!). Measure and mark and measure again. Particularly with the tower brackets, of you get this sideways, the shelves won't fit. Get your level out and spot check your widths (do this before you drink too many beers! lol). Though I tried to drill into studs where possible, I did have to purchase a box of different wall anchors ($) as the ones included in the kit were unsuitable for the type of plaster in this older 50's house. In this install, I had a leftover piece of shelving that I cut down into an additional tower shelf and by drilling in four pin holes, was able to gain an extra storage space (it comes with additional shelf pins which was nice). If you don't have any extra shelving, you might want to buy the tower shelf kit in addition, as the base kit only supplies two shelves for a six foot tower. My boyfriend very kindly helped me install the 6x4 walk in system and it went much more quickly even though the configuration was different. The additional storage space is great and so much more efficient than the old home built shelves that were there when I bought the house. All in all, these two improvements look fantastic and I saved a LOT of money by investing my time, not to mention, improved my DIY skills and built my confidence in my abilities. Love this product - just get your tools out and get started and before you know it, you will be enjoying a custom fitted closet!

My husband and I installed 2 Deluxe 16" Honey Maple Closet systems with an additional stand alone tower and additional shelving. We consider ourselves "do-it-yourselfers". The product arrived on schedule with all pieces included and no damage to boxes or contents. Overstock mistakenly shipped one wrong item to us, but promptly re-ordered the correct item for us. Overstock's Customer Service Rep (Clinton?) was very professional and apologetic about the mistake. We had the carrier pick up and return the incorrect merchandise at no charge or inconvenience to us. John Louis does a great job with its packaging (thick cardboard, heavy-duty boxes along with ziploc-style bags that individually held all the screws and other hardware needed for each unit and accessories). Packing materials were wrapped around the contents/shelves, etc. for added protection. What we found very helpful were not only the written instructions included with the shipment, but also the website instructional video that showed examples of how to install the closet system. We worked on the project over a weekend, installing the system in our newly created 11.7'x8' closet. Once we completed a section, it was fairly straightforward on how to assemble the closet components together. We also ordered an extra stand alone tower, to which we added 7 shelves (some slanted and some flat for shoes and sweaters. The stain color seems true to the photos shown online and the system seems very sturdy in what seems to be a very nice Maple hardwood. The design in very attractive and the ventilated shelves will offer a nice airflow around the clothes. Here is the configuration/layout we opted for: Left wall: 48" upper and lower short hangs; 1 tower from kit with 3-8" drawers, 2-6" drawers and 2 shelve sections creating 3 shelf sections; 24" short hang on top with a 24" shelf on lower section, with valet rod attached. Right Wall: 24" upper hang attached to a 48" shelf above connecting to a stand-alone tower that rests upon the floor (valet rod attached). Side Mount Tie & Belt Rack attached inside right side of this 24" hanging areaWindow in between where we'll place a storage bench below window. Continuing next to window: 48" upper and lower short hangs. We used a haxsaw to cut the metal clothes poles and a radial arm saw to cut the shelves into smaller pieces (masking tape on area that was cut to help keep wood edges from fraying). We have 2-6' metal clothes poles leftover (because of the configuration we chose) so we'll keep and use those towards a future project (along with a variety of misc. extra screws, etc. as John Louis gives extras just in case). We highly recommend John Louis; it's a great product that is few steps above the box store options and a great option compared to the top-name closet systems that cost much more and, in our opinion, possibly not as nice in that some are not even real hardwood.

I just remodeled my basement into an apartment and in my master bedroom I have a huge walk in closet. This closet system fit perfectly and I was able to configure it so I could use it on 2 seperate walls. I put the main system on the big wall and had enough left over to put a 4ft shelf and clothes bar on another wall. The only issue I had was that I needed to buy additional L brackets for the 2 ends of they system. I had to do this because I didn't have another wall to attach the end to. No big deal and the whole system is very secure.I was actually surprised at how sturdy the whole system is. I was also concerned about the depth of the shelves but the 12" depth works just fine. I was able to put several items on each shelf with no issue at all.2 pieces of advice...don't over-tighten the screws in the system and find studs. I drew a level line and screwed along the line to verify I had the studs...if you miss... the hole is hidden by the shelf and this way you are guaranteed to hit the stud. I also screwed the bottom hole on the L bracket along this line so the pencil line wouldn't be visible and every bracket was level.Enjoy the upgrade to your closet

Very nice closet system but I had to adjust the rod location because it caused the hanger to be to close to the wall. The manufacture needs to adjust their directions.

I bought this system for my daughter's closet. We used every inch of the product. The closet is the size of a piece of plywood (4 x 8). We could have spaced it a bit different and used less possibly. Now that the system is on the wall, I think that the deluxe version would have been nicer. The standard is deep but I now want the deeper one. There is no way that I am going to change the system now. The wood is solid and is not going anywhere. It looks nice on the wall.

This is a high quality closet system, made entirely of wood (pine). All hardware is also excellent. I added 5 drawers and the glass doors to this base system, which eliminates the need for a separate dresser in the smallish bedroom. By comparison the closet is rather spacious and deep. Assembly is a fairly long and tedious process, particularly if you are adding accessories such as the drawers and doors which I added, and you should also consider the prep time to remove any existing closet hardware and repair any damage to the closet caused by this before you start. Total time with the accessories and demolition and prep was about two full work days for me. Mostly, with the exception of alignment of the drawers the assembly and installation process is fairly straight forward. It does require a fairly good collection of tools; I used (needed) a drill with various bits for pilot holes (I recommend that you use a pilot hole for every screw you use, for some this is a must). I also needed a powerfull power screw driver, you will be screwing things together for weeks otherwise. You also need levels and plumb lines. I used a table saw for custom cutting the shelving, though these could be done manually or with a circular saw. I also used a scissor jack, and piece of plywood to jack the box up on the wall and hold it as I fastened the box to the wall. Two helpers could have done this, but probably with somewhat less precision. A stud finder for locating the studs in your wall would certainly be a plus also. The base unit and the glass door accessory go together in a fairly straightforward fashion. The drawer units are somewhat more tedious to assemble and install. The cam locking mechanism that is used to assemble the drawers are somewhat fragile, its easy to break a cam/lock. Across the 5 drawers I was installing I had enough spare cam/locks to tolerate this breakage, but each drawer did not come with extras, it seemed hit or miss. One set of cam/lock holes was miss aligned, not bad considering the 30 to 40 sets of these in all the drawers, but this was not a serious problem, I replaced it with a simple wood screw (an appropriately sized drill bit with counter sink to counter sink the screw head and of course a screw also needed. Actual installation of the drawer rails and and drawer in the main box is in theory simple. The problem I encountered and one which I would guess is fairly common, is that the drawer rail system is very picky about the precise spacing between the rails, it really needs to be exactly 24" or the rail bind. Alas the box is 6 feet tall, and there is no intermediate bracing between the top and bottom to assure that the box sides are perfectly straight from top to bottom. The top and bottom pieces assure that the sides start off at the precise correct spacing, and the mount to the wall holds the back of the box with the correct alignment, but any slight warp in the box sides and cause the front of the box to be somewhat out of alignment with other than the precise side to side spacing required by the drawer side rails. (The instructions by the way do not exaggerate when they say the side to side measurements of the placement of the mounting hardware on the wall need to be very precise; they most certainly do). The wrap is not a cosmetic problem, the box is certainly aligned well enough that you cannot see any wrapping with the eye, but a 1/4 or an inch in the center of the box will cause binding in the drawer slides. I was able to accommodate this buy using shim washers between the box and the rails, not a particularly tedious adjustment, but of course you will need a bunch of washers to accomplish this. Fortunately, I my case, rummaging around in the shop produced enough suitable washers. Once installed, and aligned the drawer system is of high quality with full extension drawer slides, no complaint as to the quality. I did have one complaint, which is with respect to Overstock fulfillment of my order. The 8" drawer was clearly not new, it had been repackaged and returned by someone, who appeared to have been overwhelmed by the job of assembling the drawer. From the screw holes in the side of the drawer box (in the wrong place), it was apparent that he did not understand the assembly instructions, and he probably could not get the drawer installed. In any case he packaged most of the pieces in the box and returned them, and the used drawer was sent to me missing some of the pieces, fortunately nothing particularly critical, I was able to substitute for missing pieces with more rummaging around in the shop, or with extras from other drawers. There did not seem to be any cosmetic problems with the drawer so I just used it. Still did not expect to be shipped repackaged returned stuff to be sold as new, and it would have been a real pain if something critical had been missing. Bottom line this is a very nice system, once installed it looks great, and functions well. The installation is somewhat tedious though, and you do have to be light on your feet as you go along, particularly with drawers. This should probably not be attempted by novice DIY'ers, it takes a lot more than a Philips head screw driver to put this together,

This is a very nice, all wood closet system that works perfectly in my daughter's room. She doesn't have an actual closet and we have this up against a wall. The only negative is that the drawers that I ordered are 14" and do not work. I had to order two more shelves and return the drawers.

Very solid and anchors well to the wall. Very nice system. Our packages had probably 100 small black plastic disks in it. Must have gone haywire in packing! It was funny though.

I have 3 walls with the John Louis Home systems (two 12'' widths and one 16"). I installed this tie and belt rack alongside the 16" pant rack under the tower of this system in about 10 minutes.: http://www.overstock.com/Home-Garden/John-Louis-16-Inch-Deep-Espresso-Woodcrest-Closet-System/7915140/product.html They fit perfectly and the added hanging space was just what the system needed..
