Bouguereau's command of the human form in the classical style is evident in both composition and use of color. The identity of the little girl in this portrait is unknown, however, she has appeared in at least one other of his paintings.

I bought the STORY BOOK yrs ago its not the oil painting, but its a copy on a hard backing. I just love the painting and the idea of a little girl giving the impression of excepting life and what it means to be that young in todays hard times. No matter where you are standing, the child looks straight into your eyes and you are transfixed by her gaze. The frame is golden brown and absolutely perfect for the painting.
