I have been looking for a bed that will match some inherited teak pieces, and this is perfect. All three boxes came within a week. The bed itself is well made and very solid once assembled. Although the directions (which are clearly written and easy to follow) suggest two adults for assembly, I was able to put it together myself in about three hours. Do have a power drill on hand, though. You'll need it for the 24 screws without pilot holes for the slats...
Be aware that, should you choose to use a box spring as well as a mattress, the surface will be about three feet off the ground. I am 5'6" and have to hurdle myself onto it! (The cats love this, however.)
All in all, I am very pleased with this purchase, my first from overstock.com.
I ordered the bed along with one of the two dressers and received six boxes in total. I have to say that at first it looked increadibly daunting. Still, my friend and I took it step by step and found the instructions generally well written if a bit sparse. Onto the piece.
I cannot speak highly enough of this bed. It transcends beautiful -- it is stunning. Clean, simple, elegant lines and wood that well exceeds the quality one would expect for this price range. The fixtures are made of solid brass and are easy to disassemble, in case of a needed move someday. The wood is supple to the touch and hefty in feel indicating a solid construction and not particleboard or pressed wood with laminate.
One thing I would add, though, is that my piece came slightly darker than appears in its photo. As a photographer, my monitor is color calibrated so I know the photo was probably a bit light. For me this is great as I worried that it might actually be too light for my taste.
In summation: Highly recommended.
This bed is beautiful and amazing quality. Well worth the price... Well worth far more than the price (and it looks like I paid far more for it). The wood is solid with a gorgeous grain, and the stain is very rich. Even the slats are very solid; I've had platform beds with supposedly solid wood slats where the wood was light and fragile. Never had any of them break but also never felt 100% secure sleeping on them. I have no such qualms about these slats. Appearance and quality-wise, I could not be happier with the bed.
The assembly was a complete nightmare. I don't know what some of these other reviewers are talking about, but I cannot believe anyone was able to assemble this bed easily or alone. The headboard alone took myself and my boyfriend, who is very good at things like this, two hours to put together, and by the end of it my guy was practically sobbing with frustration. You have to screw the headboard together using an allen wrench in a tiny little space, and the angle is such that the wrench gets stuck... It's awful. AWFUL. The rest of the bed was easier, thank god, but I would not wish the headboard on my worst enemy. Also, the other reviewers are correct that a drill with a phillips bit to get the screws through the slats and into the supports is very necessary.
Don't let my assessment of the assembly frighten you away from buying this bed. It was worth it given the beauty and quality we ended up with. But don't go into it expecting it to be easy, because it is just NOT.
How did the color on site compare with the actual product? The picture is a little lighter than the bed, as others have said.
Please tell us about the quality of the product. Very high quality.
How accurate was the on site description of the product? Very accurate.
In short, if you are still unsure about purchasing this bed, all I can say is BUY IT! I flip-flopped around for a few weeks uncertain if I should purchase a bed from Overstock. Well, I took the plunge and finally did. I ordered on a Sunday and it arrived that Friday, talk about fast!
The pieces were well packed and nothing was missing or damaged. I must admit, despite the other reviews, I found this bed very easy to assemble alone, taking me about 1 hour. But I suppose depending on your skill level, the assembly experience will probably vary.
Anyway, once assembled this bed becomes a very beautiful furniture piece. Solid wood of excellent quality and a very nice rich walnut finish. I have this bed in a Japanese themed room and it fits very well.
If you are a fan of simple, clean design, you will not be disappointed.
Based on the awesome reviews I've been reading on this bed, I decided to go ahead and order it. Like most have said, it is a great really modern bed, a bit more of a dark reddish brown than pictured. The height where the mattress would be placed is 15" from the ground, so to place a box spring would not only be too high, but would block out a portion of the lovely head board. There are also 4 little legs in the center of the bed should there be a need for extra support. And as most people have complained about, the annoying part is putting the headboard together, but other than that, the rest was pretty straightforward, just need a electric screwdriver to screw in the slats of the platform (no pre-drilled holes). Besides carrying the 3 boxes up 2 flights of stairs (overstock left in lobby) it was an awesome first time buy!
As most other reviewers have said, everything came in well packaged. The bed is beautiful, although a little darker than I thought it would be. As for assembly, I did it myself. And I am not a dyi guy. Took about 3 hours, including the time I lost trying to use part 9 instead of part 6. As for not being a dyi guy- it was the first time I used my drill to tighten screws (for the slats), and I did a little damage to the finish on the bedrail before I figured out I needed to lengthen the screw driver bit (I had pushed it all the way in and the drill hit the bed rail twice). A little dark stain will fix the damage, which really won't be visible anyway. Not sure what similar beds cost, but for ** this is certainly a nice addition to one of my guest bedrooms.
My wife and I are pleased with the purchase of this bed.
It arrived in 3 boxes, sooner than estimated.
We both worked to put it together, and having two people present is a definite plus during assembly, although I could have assembled the bed by myself if I had to.
It took about two hours to fully assemble.
The assembly instructions were adequate.
I agree with other reviews which suggest having a power driver handy for screwing the slats onto the frame. There are no pilot holes in the frame rails, and it would have been very frustrating and time-consuming to screw them all in by hand with a simple screwdriver.
If you are assembling the bed on a hard floor (wood or other non-carpeted surface), do yourself a favor and lay down a blanket first, before laying the headboard section down to work on it. The wood apparently scratches quite easily. Fortunately, the scratches I caused are minor enough so as not to be visible from any distance, but it's just disheartening to have a nice, fancy, brand new bed, and it's already got wear on it.
Be aware that there are two lengthwise rails which run down the middle between the headboard and the footboard, to support the slats. These merely rest in two brackets on the footboard, without being screwed in at that end. That's fine, but the brackets are much larger than the dimensions of the wooden rails, and it seems as though the rails could slide a bit in the brackets, back and forth, possibly making noise if or when they do.
I solved this by putting some cloth (an old cut up sock) around the ends of these rails, so that they were cushioned in their brackets.
We use a futon mattress on this bed, and while it is very firm, it's nice and flat and stable, and doesn't make noise or jiggle too much like our previous bedframe.
For the price paid, we think this was a very good deal. The design is attractive and the material seems solid.
This is a great platform bed. I searched high a low for a reasonably priced wood bed and finally found and purchased this one with its matching dresser and love them both! The construction is solid, assembly time was a little long and definitely requires 2 people, but in the end you will have a well built bed. The color is great, but it is no where near as red as it appears in the image, which was fine. Its more dark brown with a red tone. I would highly recommend this bed, particularly if you have a smaller room and don't want an overly high and bulky bed taking up physical or visual space.
Is there a center support beam that runs up the length of the bed? I've learned these are very important if you have a memory foam mattress to avoid the bed from sagging in the middle.gwrobertson89 on Nov 18, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Hello, gwrobertson89. In addition to the horizontal slats, this bed has two bars running up the length of the bed. There is not a bar in the very center of the bed, but the two beams are evenly spaced. Thank you for your question, and have a great day.overstockcustomercare1 on Nov 26, 2013
What distance is there between the slats on the platform of this bed?jabaru on Nov 4, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
They did not appear to be any different than any other bed. Maybe a foot apart.
Plenty of support.frizbea on Nov 9, 2013
The assembly instructions suggest spacing the slats about 80 mm (8 cm) apart from each other.
We followed this suggestion and spaced each slat with approximately 8 cm distance between each one.
I was pleased with the result. Unlike some beds, this one came with an ample number of slats to provide a very solid foundation with minimal gaps between each slat.
We use a futon mattress on it, and the slats & gaps are not at all noticeable when laying, sitting, or standing on the bed.tenmiles on Dec 31, 2013

In our crosscountry move, the headboard to this bed unfortunately got lost. Is there any way to order a replacement part? Also, is there any way to get the instructions to building the bed? Thanks!srb81 on May 23, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
I love the look of the bed but I am concerned that it is veneer rather than solid wood. Could I get feedback from customers on whether they have had a problem with the veneer chipping or peeling?customeryy on Mar 17, 2013Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
No problem so far. We have had the bed for 8 months. We really like it.evinatlanta on Mar 19, 2013
I've had the bed almost a year and have noticed no chipping or peeling. My boyfriend accidentally chipped it with a hammer when we were assembling it (long story) and even in that little area where there's already a flaw the veneer has stayed in place. Go for it, the bed is amazing :)avaxcontrol on Apr 14, 2013
I don't know what other people have mentioned here, the entire construction of my bed appears to be solid wood; though the visible parts (not the slats and rails) do appear to be finger-jointed wood sections rather than whole pieces of wood.
We've had ours for a few weeks, but we're quite happy with the quality and stability of the bed so far.tenmiles on Dec 31, 2013
Is the headboard sturdy enough that it can support 2 people leaning against it (as in reading or watching tv)?janlee444 on Sep 14, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
The headboard is very sturdy, but the answer depends on several factors, such as how heavy the individuals are, or whether or not you have a boxspring which might add more leverage to the headboard. We haven''t had any complaints regarding the issue, nor do we have a way to test it.overstockcustomercare1 on Sep 14, 2012
My wife and I have no trouble both sitting up in bed, leaning against pillows against the headboard, watching TV. The headboard seems to be strong enough even to take some tugging, if for some reason a person was compelled to grab on to the rails of the headboard for purchase or stability in some active circumstance...tenmiles on Dec 31, 2013

What's the height from floor to frame; i.e., what's the tallest item that can be stored underneath?bigbedboy on Aug 19, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
The height from the floor to the frame is 10.5 inches. The tallest item that can be stored underneath, then, would be about 10.3 inches.overstockcustomercare1 on Aug 21, 2012
Be aware though, that there are four short support legs which are set up below the slats, near the middle of the bed, which mean that you cannot use the entire under-bed space for very large/wide objects.tenmiles on Dec 31, 2013
what size mattress would fit this? would a 12" be higher than the footboard? on Jul 30, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
Normally we use the thickness 8 inches mattress as our standard mattress to fit in our bed. Yes, the thickness 12 inches mattress is higher than the footboard. overstockcustomercare1 on Aug 1, 2012
I see many reviewers say they're using a memory foam mattress with this. Does that work with the slats or is it best to get a bunkie board (a solid platform to go on top of the slats)? It seems like the memory foam would get squished into the spaces between the slats...avaxcontrol on Jun 10, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
In my experience, a memory foam mattress has worked fine with a platform bed that has many slats.overstockcustomercare1 on Jun 12, 2012
I forgot to count, but our bed came with at least a dozen slats. The assembly instructions said to space them with 8 centimeter gaps between them, which seemed to make them all come out rather evenly.
I was very pleased at the support offered by this number of slats. I don't think it would be necessary to use a flat board or sheet of plywood on top of the slats.tenmiles on Dec 31, 2013
You indicated that a box spring is not required but I would like to know whether you can use a box spring and mattress with the bed.9989burbank on May 24, 2012Please enter a valid question.Answer This Question
We are using it with a mattress and boxspring. It's pretty high with both (blocking some of the nice design of the headboard). If we were to buy a bed again, we'd get a lower-profile boxspring.miahamm on Jun 20, 2013
