I bought a pair of these lamps for a spring/summer look in a space that is a transitional design (contemporary and traditional). The large scale of these lamps is perfect for my buffet and I love the shape! The clear glass base provides an uncluttered look. I read the negative review but was not deterred. This lamp has french wiring (from the neck rather than through the center) so that it is completely transparent -- no cord running through the interior of the lamp to disrupt the clear glass. It's true that there is no base. However if there were, it would have to be glued and that would be messy and unsightly. The glass is good quality -- clear, without bubbles and or imperfections. I saw a similar lamp in silver and it retails for three times the price on a high end web site! I got two for less than the price of one. So am I satisfied? You bet!

I'm giving this a poor rating because the cord extends from just below the socket, not the base, as one of the answers stated. I've never seen a lamp designed like this - it's very tacky-looking. The lamp is huge, so you need a large room with a large piece of furniture to place it on. Also, the lamp doesn't have a base - it's just open at the bottom which is weird looking. The picture is deceiving. It should show the cord extending from the top of the lamp.
